Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

what time would you leave? The trip takes 8 hours.
Here's his normal schedule:
7:oo am - wakes up + bottle
8:00 am - breakfast
9:30-11am - nap
12/1pm - lunch
3pm - bottle
4-5pm - Nap
5pm - Dinner
7 pm - bottle
8 pm - bedtime

Right now planning on leaving right after breakfast. Hopefull he'll sleep til lunchtime, then we'll stop at a rest stop. Then stop again an hour or 2 later for his bottle. After that finish the drive and have dinner when we get there.

Re: Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

sounds like a plan. When my others with little we loved to leave late afternoon to drive to florida. this way when they had enough it was bedtime anyway and then they would sleep as we drove all night long. Yikes

Re: Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

I leave at 4 am

keep lights off, change diaper...keep him in pjs..throw him in car.

when he wakes at 8 give him bottle...breakfast, change...back in car.

then your trip is 1/2 way over.

I feel like if I do that, I am only making him "trave" half the distance.

I am actually doing this trip tonight to VA with my 2.5 yr old and 15 month old. We are leaving at bedtime 8pm... my trip is only about 6.5 hours though. They sleep the whole time and are sleeping when we arrive. I just transfer them into bed and viola they wake up the next morning in a different state.

This really works best for us... we get there in record time too cause it's an off time of day

We drove to N.C. with DS in Feruary, he was 7 months at the time and we were on the rode by 3 AM, we just changed his diaper, kept him in PJ's and put him in his car seat and he slept in the car until 6-30 when we made our first stop, and that's when I put clothes on him for the day, It reallt wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. We also had a portable DVD player that hooks on to the headrest in the car, and that kept him entertained with Blues Clues and stuff like that when he was awake....

still trying to decide when to leave!
I want to go now and drive through the nite but then we're going to be so tired tomorrow.

then go now!

driving 8 hours tomorrow is going to be draining if you leave after breakfast.

when you get there just take a nap...you can still salvage some of the day.

This is exactly what we are doing when we drive 11.5 hours to MO.

I think this is the best scenario

I've done a five hour drive. I changed his diaper and put him in the car at 5am. He was awake for a little while then he fell back asleep.

I agree, it is still 8hrs, and honestly Julz, it is supposed to be TERRIBLE tomorrow, so if you get a head start, you can always rest tomorrow when you get thereChat Icon

Re: Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

I'm glad you asked this - we may be driving with DS to NC and was wondering the same thing. I think the best case is either leaving at bedtime - or middle of the night.
I don't know about your DS but mine will not stay asleep in the car for that long. We've driven over an hour during his usual nap time and he will usually wake up after an hour and then get fussy because he wants to move around.

Re: Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

Last time when we drove to Key West from west palm beach are it too about 6 hours, but we had my mom with us in the backseat, and he was only 5 months old.
Wishing she was coming with us this time. Chat Icon
He is NOT very good int he car. He is going to be saying "Up. Up." and whining the whole time, thats why I want to drive through the nite while he sleeps.

Re: Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

We're driving to the Outerbanks in July which is 10 hrs.

We decided there was no way to do it in one trip without DS freaking out.

We're going to leave 7PM Sat night (his usual bedtime) and drive till 1AM (find a hotel), check in, hope he sleeps the whole way and falls right back asleep in the hotel and the continue the rest of teh trip (4 hrs or so) the next day 2 hrs before his nap time and hope he takes a 2 hr nap.

That way he will only be awake in the car for 2 hrs.

We will have a DVD player in the back for him, snacks, toys, you name it.

Re: Driving to Virginia with a 1 year old...

We have done 2 7 hour trips for one DS was 7 months and the other he was 15 months.

For the first I think we didnt leave until 9 but we were going north so we broke up the trip by taking the ferry. The second we left at like 9 as well. We drove straight, stopped 1x for food and then kept going until we got there. DS was fine, I packed extra bottles (making them smaller so he didnt have too much overall - but obviously throwing his schedule out the window) so he could have one whenever he got too crabby.
Snacks he could hold, a bucket full of toys next to him so he could grab as he pleased, lots of books, a portable DVD player with tons of baby einstein. And I think we stopped one time at a rest stop (only the older kids got out to pee) and my niece hopped in with us to keep him company.

And DS doesnt sleep too much in the car, maybe 1 hour out of the whole ride!

Let me know how the trip is, we are thinking of going to Busch Gardens this summer!!

ENJOY!
