DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
We still havent done it, DS will be 2 next month. Every month we say we are going to do it, I chicken out. He just loves it so much and I dont want him to be sad. He looks at me with his big brown eyes and says "boo please mommy" (we call it a boo). How do you say no to that??? Im such a sucker. I realize its only going to hurt him in the long run, but I just dont have the heart. So Im not asking how you technically got rid of the paci....I need to know how you yourself did it?

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
I took it away at 12 months before they were too extremely attached to it I slowly cut the nipple shorter and shorter for my DD so she was never mad about it because she slowly weaned off of it over a week.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
I took it away about a week or so ago. She's actually fine without it, but I do give in when she's about to have a tantrum in public or while in the car I always have one on me just in case.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
No advice - DD misplaced hers one day (we only had one that she truly liked) and I didn't buy a replacement. It eventually turned up, but by that point (@ 2 weeks later) she was completely over it.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
We let him have the paci only in his crib after he turned two. When he turned three, we told him we were going to give it to Santa and that Santa would bring him a gift in exchange. Worked like a charm, it was so much easier than I anticipated.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
We bit the bullet a few weeks ago. I, honestly, had to be fed up to be prepared to push her to kick the habit. We were at the point where she would wake up at night and if her binky was under the covers or had fallen on the floor & she couldn't find it, she would call me in to get it. It happened twice one night and I was like that's it....between getting up 2x with Lily and then getting up 2x with her that night...I couldn't do it anymore. So I convinced her that she was too big for binkies & told her that we should just throw them away. She said okay and went in the cabinet herself & threw them all in the garbage. It was garbage day so out they went and got carted away. Wayne asked if I wanted to hold one just in case but I said no b/c I knew I'd give it to her if she asked. There was no turning back! She has mentioned it and has spoken about being too big for it. She never cried for it though. It did take her longer to fall asleep for a good week. We were all ready for this so it's really one less thing for us to have to deal with now.
Mel, just do it. It doesn't get easier. He will manage.....look at what a champ he was with that cast. He will adjust.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
Crashing...My sister made my BIL do it. It only took one night and my niece seemed fine after that initial night. She was a little older though. My sister's theory was she wasn't going to Kindergarten with it so there was no rush. My BIL decided it was time when she kept biting holes in it. She was 3 and at that point only used at bedtime (she was never much of a napper).

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
DS got rid of his himself actually when he was 2 1/2 years old. A week before I was going to have DD, DS, DH & I went to the mall. We were walking around Old Navy and he must of dropped it. When we left the store he was looking for it and that was when we realized he dropped it and that was it. He never had it again.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
the binky 'paci' box....take a small box and let your child decorate it with stickers crayons etc and tell them to put their binky in the box and put it under their bed...the next morning they will get a suprise toy from the binky fairy who will have taken his binky to a special place. has worked for a bunch of toddlers that i know

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
A strong case of cox sackie & not giving in once it was over.
Throw every pacifer out in the house & tell him "all gone". He will thrash & be in an angry mood for about 4-8 days. Every day you don't give in is one day less than you'll have to go through it in the future.
Cold turkey is really the easiest & quickest way.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
We did it when DD was 2 years, 3 months old. It was so much easier than I antiicipated. I went out one night to the movies with friends, washed the "Bs" (what DD called it) and forgot them by the sink. She only used them in her crib when sleeping. DH put her to bed and they weren't there. DD said "where my b's?" DH (who wanted to get rid of them anyway) said they were put away. She said ok, fell asleep, and that was it. the next night she asked again, same thing happened. It was so much easier than I expected. BUT she stopped napping in her crib after that.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
DD only gets her pacifier when in the car or bedtime, nap time included. That's it. Not in public.
Maybe you should start cutting down to only at bedtime and that's it? It's a hard situation esp. to see his face all cute when he asks for it, but you must stay strong. Eventually it'll be over and no looking back!!

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
I have no idea how to do this but my day care director is after me to break her of the paci habit and I just don't know what to do...
Don't know how to take her off bottles either.

Re: DS aside...how did YOU handle getting rid of the paci?
I thought it would be torturous for both my kids, but they handled it great
#1 - we couldn't find any and it took a bit to get down for his nap, but he eventually went down. when we found some a week later - he put it in his mouth and took it out and put it down
#2 - got a strep infection on his chin, so it was doctor mandated - he didn't even flinch - which I thought he would be a mess
both were at about 18 months
