God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
Eddie is 22 months and still uses the paci ALL day. Well let me rephrase, all day if Im with him. DH and my mom who watches him limit it way more. So now that his cast is off, we are going to tackle the paci. Do we go cold turkey, wean him off at naps first then bedtime? How does one even do this, he is SUPER attached to it. In shouldve done this a year ago. I need all the help I can get.

Maybe try to pretend to give it to something - my nieces gave theirs to the birthday princess - worked well for both!
DD is 19 mos and still uses it for bedtime and naps, I have no clue when we will tackle that one!

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
We just went through this with Caden...
We first thought we would try and limit him and only allow it for naps and bed. But that didnt work b/c he knew they were still around. Honestly...for lack of a better expression, he was like a drug addict looking for his next fix. He would search the house for one...even to go so far as to move his crib.
So we nixed that idea and just quit cold turkey..
Surprisingly he did very well. Went down for bed and naps without incident. It was tough in the morning though. We just ignored him and let him throw his temper tantrums. After a few days he was fine.
Now after 2 weeks his OK. He'll still ask for it from time to time. Especially when he wants to veg out or needs to soothe himself...We bought him some stuffed animals and give him those when he needs to relax. That seemed to work for him...
Good Luck...

We still haven't done away with the paci for Piper. She has it for naps and night sleep. We are hoping that *we* will get up the nerve to go cold turkey b4 she turns 3.

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
I made DS stop with the paci around 2 1/2... he was going to be starting pre-school soon and while I knew it was bad for his teeth and what not.. it was also just getting SO annoying...he would lose them and then we'd be SEARCHING before bedtime
besides the fact that he was biting holes and them and I was constantly buying new ones
He was down to just one and left it at my sister's house one night when he slept over so I decided that was it.. and didn't buy a new one. Everytime he bugged me about it I told him we lost it.. ( I actually remember telling him a few times that the garbage man took it.. and he was mad at them.. but I thought he'd never be up early enough to see them.. I was wrong and he yelled at them out the window )
Anyway, he got over it and stopped asking. But I must add that he does use a blanket that he calls his "baby" so I think that probably helped some around bedtime b/c at least he still had that

My mom told me for some reason, that my grandfather threw them out. She says I didnt speak to him for a week. DS does have a lovey so Im hoping that helps, but Im also nervous about it bc to him the two go hand in hand, but like you said, at least hell have that.

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
I wish I knew. My son is ADDICTED to his. If we are out, he forgets all about it, but in the house, I cannot get it out of his mouth. And the battle is just more then I can handle right now. Worst part for him is it is affecting his speech which is delayed already.
Im about to start to tackle this and decided to try to limit it to sleeping only at night ( not even naps).
If It works I will let ya know how! Post any progress you make as well!!!
GOOD LUCK!

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
I am trying to do this as well. DD is 20 months. We have a million pacis and they seem to pop up all over the place. I "thought" i put her to bed without one the other night and I was so happy she slept fine. Then in the morning when I went in to get her there was one in her crib! It must have been under her blanket or something. False Hope! LOL
Tomorrow I am going on a "paci hunt" in the house to remove all of them so she can't find one by accident. I cut the tips off 2 of them and she wants nothing to do with them. I may do it to all of them except a couple "emergency" ones. I just keep saying, "Pacis are for babies. You are a big girl now"
The thing that gets me is that she doesn't use one at daycare at all, so I know she doesn't NEED one per say.

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
DD is only 7 months, but I am already dreading this fight. I know it's going to be a big one. She will not go down for a nap, or for the night, without her paci. She even cries for it in the car now

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
DD will be 2 in a month and we are going cold turkey. We generally just let her have them for sleeping and car rides, but next month that will be gone too.
I am dreading it.

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
We were dreading this as well, but one night he was very tired and fell asleep without it. I took it as a sign and never gave it back. The next morning and the rest of the week were hard because he was looking for it. But by week 2 he forgot about it I think he was 15 or 16 months. I think the best thing is cold turkey.

Re: God give me strength - getting rid of the paci.......
DD is almost 17 months and I stopped cold turkey 5 days ago. It's been a little rough. She's great at bedtime and during the day but it's the naptime that kills me. She screams and cries and it breaks my heart. It get a little better each day I guess but she seems a little crankier too. Oh, and she's been getting up at 6 instead of her usual 7 in the morning .
