DS hasn't pooped going on 3 days... UPDATE

My 3 months old son has always pooped SEVERAL times a day. He was EBF until 2 weeks ago, when I started to give 1 or 2 bottles of formula a day.

Now, he hasn't pooped since Friday (going. on three days). I'm worried... Is this normal? What can I do for him?

Also, now when he passes gas, it smells, before this no poop business, it never smelled when he passed gas. Sorry TMI!

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you ladies SO MUCH for responding. I tried an ounce of water - no luck. I then called the pediatrician and she said to insert thermometer every couple of hours until he has BM. If that didn't work by today, get the glycerin suppositories. I did the thermometer trick once before bed at about 10 p.m. and again when he woke at 4 a.m. He pooped somewhere between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. this morning!!!! It was the normal mushy, pastey, consistancy that it's been since I started a bottle a day of formula (not as yellow and watery and when strictly BFing, but not solid, or seemingly constipated).

My DD is six months old and I started weaning her off of BF and onto formula a few weeks ago. She only poops about twice a week now and her gas and poop is VERY smelly and her poop looks totally different too. I have read that this is normal!

While I did not BF very long (1 1/2 weeks), DS did have issues with not pooping often. It would be 2-3 days between BMs. After discussing it with his Ped, we added 1tsp of prune juice to every bottle, then upped it to 2 tsp. With no change we stopped prune juice and started w/ Karo syrup 1 tsp 3 bottles a day, then increased to 5 bottles a day. After no change we changed to Soy formula, that made matters worse. We went back to the non-soy formula and continued w/ Karo syrup. Still no change. At his 2 moch up, dr said we could change back to prune juice. (each "new" thing we tried, we did it for 3 days per Drs orders)

Then after about 2 weeks on the regualr formula w/ 2 tsp of prune juice in every bottle, he is going almost every day, sometimes he skips a day.

Just want to tell you, thru all this I did TONS of reading/research on infant constipation. Infant constipation is determined by the consistency NOT the frequency. This may be his adjustment to formula.

Oh, DS STILL has stinky gas, even with going everyday!!

An ounce of water should do the trick. I give it to Emma when she is constipated along with sticking the thermometer in her butt. That gets it going!

Sometimes the formula can do that to the. It takes longer for it to digest than breastmilk. When i was giving DS formula in the beginning he didnt poop for like 4 days once i started breastfeeding he went 3-4 times per day.

I would suggest takign a thermometer with vaseline and just gently massaging the area where he poops. It worked for me!

When DS doesnt poop, my dr. tells me to get the suppositories from either CVS or Walgreens and he poops wtihin 1/2 hour.
