same here!!

the two main brands to decide between is nikon and canon... it is like choosing between coke and pepsi... some people are nikon people, others canon... go to the store and pick them both up and see what feels best in your hands!

Something that i also recommend to my students is to not purchase the kit lens, and just buy the body and a separate lens, that way you can get a higher quality lens... both cameras have an awesome 50mm f1.8 lens, for about $100, however if you are used to zooming in and out, you wont like this...

i agree with all of the above. i started off with the original canon rebel and just recently upgraded to a more professional model, although my old rebel still works just fine.

Re: dSLR moms

I shoot Nikon.. lOVE IT.. D60 should be good for what you need. As a PP stated son't get a stock lens. Invest in a nice prime or "fixed" lense like the 50 mm

what did you buy? i still have the original, and a professional photographer suggested i get the 5D but i think that may be overkill for me (although i would love to shoot pro someday) Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: dSLR moms

Thank you all for your responses! So if I buy the body seperate, which lens do you recommend? Will I be able to buy the body and lens seperate in a store, or do you have to do that online?

i was thinking of entering the NIKON brand....

what's the major differences between the D40 & D60? can you use more lenses with the D60 - because of the 'motor'??

A 50mm lens is your best bet. If you go Canon the 50mm f/1.8 is your best bet. Nikon makes a 50mm f/1.8 also, but I think it doesn't auto-focus on all Nikon bodies so some chose the 1.4 instead for the auto-focusing abilities. I'm a Canon girl, so hopefully someone else can give you better info. The 1.8 versions are undrer $100.

I buy all my camera gear online usually from B&H. I find they tend to have the best prices. Just ordered a new lens from them today!! Chat Icon Not sure what the LI stores carry since I'm in NJ.

I had the 300D and upgraded to the 40D. I LOVE it! It was worth it for the spot metering alone! I only shoot in manual now. Many other things I love too, but that's been a biggie for me. I can't justify the expense of something like the 5D at this point. If I was making money from photography it would be different. Maybe someday when the kids are in school and I have more time! Don't want to totally hijack this thread so if you want more info send FM.

I LOVED my D40 and actually cried at the camera store when I traded it in. I upgraded to the D200 for my business and I'm hoping to upgrade yet again to maybe the 700D since my business is doing really well!

BUT, before I started using the manual mode and taking more professional indoor shots, the D40 took beautiful photos. I still miss it!

Re: dSLR moms

I have the canon and have the 50mm lenses as well as the 55-250 lense, the 50mm lens takes getting used to bc you have to move in and out of the subject to zoom...but I love itChat Icon
