Ductless air conditioning units
Does anyone have these? What can you tell me about them - we were looking into them rather than CAC.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
A friend of mine from work got one last year, I want to say the company is Apple? Anyway, she has had problems with it. It could have been the work or just the house but she says it's really not that cool in there.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
We're having ours installed June 9 so I'll let you know. They said it should cool our whole first floor, since we have an open floor plan.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
are you referring to a portable unit? Try looking into a company called Koldwave
you can get info from their NY rep at Wales Darby

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
Apparently our house is not great for CAC and it would run over 11k to have it put in so we were looking into other options.
No one actually has one running in their home now though?

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
what do you mean "not great" for CAC? Is that for traditional CAC with large ductwork because there is an option.....
a company called spacepak is a high-velocity system that uses considerably smaller ductwork and in the 3 years I worked with the NY rep, I never heard of anyone NOT being able to use it.
It's been retrofit into older homes, it's used in hospitals and nursing homes because it runs quieter than your traditional system and because the air runs at a higher velocity through the ductwork, it's better for allergy sufferers and tends to be cleaner...your ductwork doesn't need cleaning as often as a traditional system does.
Also, the air handler (the unit that goes inside your home) is small enough to be put in a crawl sapce or even in a regular closet. Plus, they are compatible with an condenser on the market (the unit that goes outside).
It does tend to be more expensive to install, but is more energy efficient, so it saves you $$ in the long run.
If you want more info, contact Wales Darby (I posted the link in my above post). If I had the option of what was put in my house down here, I would have gotten Spacepak instead of the traditional CAC. Spacepak

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
I have one in my split and it is made by Friederick. We love it! It cools the whole first floor and the landing up by the bedrooms (only 5 steps up from the livingroom). It is also very quite and cools very fast. You need to make sure you get a unit that is big enough to cool the area and also need to put it in the right location for it cool the whole space other wise it will be cooler in certain spots and hotter in others.
Another thing is that we bought our unti on our own and then had a really hard time finding something to install. They wont gaurentee the unit just the work they did so I suggest buying a unit from the company that will install it.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
We are having it installed June 8th! We have no attic so no room for the air handler, so we decided to do this. DH did a lot of research and many people are happy with the system. Its pricey though - just as expensive, if not more, than central air.
ETA: FM me any specific questions you have. Since DH did the research, I may be able to help.

I don't think the system is as expensive as CAC at all. We paid I think $2000 between the unit and instalation. CAC is a lot more. We were able to get everything at cost for CAC for our home and it was $3500 and then DH would have had to run the duct work.

See part of the reason we were looking into it was they were saying around 4k or so for the ductless 11k for CAC.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
Hmmmm. We got quotes from 4 companies. All 4 of them quoted us anywhere from $10-14,000. But we have kind of a big house (2,400 sq feet). This is for 2 compressors (one on each side of the house) and 4 AC units. Two of the units are big because we have a very open floor plan and they have to cool a very large area. Brand is Sanyo, but we also looked into LG, Fujitsu and Mitubisi (sp?). I hope we're not paying too much, but since we got quotes from several companies it seemed like that was the going rate.

Right now we are thinking of only doing our first floor - as that is where our bedroom the nursery, kitchen, dining room and living room are. Upstairs we have a window unit and fans - and since we are only using the upstairs room for now as a study/gym and entertainment/computer room we didn't feel we needed it upstairs.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
We only have one unit and one compressor so that is probably why ours was low.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
DH and I are looking into this as well. Our neighbors across the street just had it installed and said they paid a little over $2000. We both have capes.

Re: Ductless air conditioning units
I'd like to revive this post for 2008
We are getting quotes to have a mini-split ductless system installed in our levittown cape. Has anyone had one installed recently that can recommend a company to furnish and install? TIA!
