Dumb question about pet stores...
Anyone ever negotiate the price of a puppy? I'm a salesman by nature and i always negotiate everything! but i wasnt sure if anyone has ever done this. I went to Shake a Paw the other day and found a puggle puppy that we absolutely love but they want $1200. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
EEEEK. Please do not buy from a pet store. They get their puppies from puppy mills. It is illegal, but since there is no task force regulating the mills, the stores capitalize on it.
Not only will you be over charged for a poorly bred-dog, but they lie about the lineage and the credentials. A significant amount of PM dogs die within the first year, and others are determined to have chronic illnesses that could have been avoided through responsible breeding.
You will have a much better, healthier puppy if you seek a quality breeder, not to mention that you will most likely spend LESS than what a pet store is trying to rip you off at.
If you know what breed you are looking for, why not do a search on petfinder.org? There are so many good quality pets up for adoption in the area.

I have to agree. Find a reputable breeder at the least. Almost any dog from a pet store is going to have health problems and ShakeAPaw is one of the worst.

They will all say that, but in reality: A- good luck getting any of them to make good on it. One thing they will not cover are the tests to see if any illness is genetic. and B- if it is not genetic they will blame YOU for not "properly" taking care of the dog & will not pay.
Neither is good for you or the pup.

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
I agree with the posters above. Definately seek a quality breeder. I just got a dachschund for $250. (discount puppy I call him ) But seriously dont buy from pet shops.
Check out these breeder directories... I got my puppy from www.terifficpets.com.
terifficpets.com
or check out Nextdaypets... nextdaypets
I hope this helps. Good luck with your search!

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
How about adopting or rescuing a puggle or other type of dog that needs a good home.
Check out petfinders.com.
Don't buy while others die. Adopt a shelter pet.

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
Okay, I know I'm stepping into the viper's nest here about the pet stores but....
What do you think happens to the pets that are not purchased from there???
It's not THEIR fault that they are in a pet store instead of a shelter.
We should ignore the puppies at the pet stores and let them die??
Believe me, I understand that the puppy mills need to be stopped, but I don't think that not buying the pets in the petstore right now is the solution.

I agree that it is not their fault that they are in the pet store and it is so sad to see them there... but if you don't buy from a pet store it WILL help stop puppymills...
"Hundreds of thousands of dogs suffer in puppy mills in this country. The dogs are prisoners of greed. They are locked in small cages. They freeze in the winter and swelter in the summer. The dogs never get out of their prisons. They are bred over and over again until they die. The only way to free them from the misery of these horrid puppymills is to eliminate the demand for puppies by refusing to buy a puppy in a pet store and boycotting those pet stores that sell puppies. When people stop buying puppies in pet stores, the puppy mills will go out of business and the misery will end. The state and federal governments do not enforce the laws to protect the dogs. The commercial breeders and brokers have huge well-funded lobbying efforts. Please join this fight to free the prisoners of greed. The only person who is going to make a difference for the dogs suffering in puppy mills is you. You, the people, can free them from their puppy mill prisons. "

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
i'm so tired of the "its saving them" arguement. no its not. some ignorant person will buy them. they dont DIE in there. if anything, they go on sale, but like i said ignorant ppl buy. the longer a pup is there the less they buy. for every ONE pup bought three more are bought by the shop. more pups die on the WAY to the shop than anything else actually. the puppymill industry needs to stop and the ONLY way for it to stop is for ppl to stop buying and supporting them.

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
I agree with all the above posters about going through a reputable breeder or rescue. Puppy mills are evil.
I also think Jes, reggie, msmbv have done so much to educate all of us on this board. I have learned SO much from them and it is clear that they truly love and care for animals.

Believe me, I understand that the puppy mills need to be stopped, but I don't think that not buying the pets in the petstore right now is the solution.
Unfortunately buying them will propogate more mills to work. It is basic supply & demand.
If you really want to help the dogs, then contact your local legislators & ask for harsher sentencing for known offenders and more/tighter regulation of suspected millers.
For every one you buy 3 more will replace it. I know it is hard to walk away from a pup in a window, but it really does more harm than good.
ETA: The reason why people like Jes, reggie, Daniela & myself, among others are so adamant about this is that the education is so limited, and many times we are painted as "extremists." The reality is this country still recognizes mills as farmers, and the dogs as livestock. Technically it is illegal, but there are not enough resources from within the government to put a stop to it. Since there is little widespread education about it, people en massse are not coming together to get the laws changed, or the enforcement stronger. That is why when we see an opportunity to spread the word, we take that opportunity very seriously. WE have to make the change a reality.
(OK off the sopabox).

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
Well, having bought a puppy at a pet store, I'm not a fan of being called ignorant, but thanks.
My question is: Are the NO reputable pet stores?
Does every SINGLE one get puppies from a puppy mill?
And shouldn't the plan of attack be to educate the pet stores about puppy mills and stop the puppy mills from abusing their dogs instead of attacking people who buy their pets at a pet store?

Re: Dumb question about pet stores...
Using the word ignorant isn't a bad thing. Someone who is unknowing about an issue is ignorant to that information.
I think that the issue here is that NO reputable breeder would ever sell their puppies to a pet store. A reputable breeder is in the business to better the bloodlines of a specific breed- not to "make money". The bloodlines of puppies from true breeders are carefully documented to ensure that no genetic weakness (such as hip dysplasia, blindness, deafness) are present.
These "designer breeds", while adorable, are NOT recognized breeds, and therefore could NOT come from a breeder. The pet stores are WELL aware of where their puppies come from.
Sadly, ALL puppies at pet stores come from puppymills and backyard breeders (i.e. oftentimes someone who decided to breed their dog "for fun" and then sell the pups). Neither BYB nor puppy mills care about bloodlines and proper breed standards. Nor do they take responsibility when there is something wrong with the puppy genetically.
On the other hand, if for whatever reason an owner discovers an issue with a dog, or can't keep the dog, the breeder will always take the animal back.
It's never OK to buy from a pet store once you know the background of where these pups come from.
