DVR tips, tricks, hints...
So......we finally got our DVR. I am so excited. I am playing around with it and setting it up with my shows.
Anyone have any tips, tricks or hints on how to use it!
Thanks

Re: DVR tips, tricks, hints...
Which one do you have? TV provider? (Cable, FiOS, Dish, etc).
Make/model. Tivo, or one from the TV provider?

Re: DVR tips, tricks, hints...
some advice: The DVR will make you more of a TV junkie than you already are
you can only record 2 shows at the same time and you have to have the channel tuned to to one of them
or, you can watch a previously DVRed show while recording 2 shows
In other words, if you DVRed prison break Monday night and are DVRing Grey's and The Office at the same time tonight, you can watch PB from Monday, while Grey's and the Office records. You just cant switch to another live show.
Sometimes, there may be more than 2 shows that you want to record at the same time. Then you have to use discretion as to what you can and cant miss. Luckily, most shows on cable replay things 8,000 times so you can always catch the replays and record them then.
Another tip, ESPECIALLY if your show comes on after a sports game (like a sunday football game), ALWAYS set it to record, at least 30 mins to an hour after its supposed to end.
In other words, say you watch the Amazing Race at 8, and the DVR is taping it from 8-9, if there's a game on before it, it may not start till 8:30 and then you'd miss half of it.
Finally, if you are taping shows on the same channel, you can set it to record all the shows in one fell swoop, rather than each show individually. This is good because you can miss the previews for next week.
In other words, if you're taping Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money from 8-11, you can record pushing daisies and just have it record 2-3 hours after it's supposed to go off, this way you'll get the other shows.
Have fun

Re: DVR tips, tricks, hints...
Well, insrtead of hitting the dvr button and going to schedle a recording, go to the channel guide and find the shows you would like to tape, then hit the record button and it will give you the option to record all episodes and so fourth. If you just schedule the recording and pick a time to tape evryday, it comes up in your recorded list as "scheduled recording", but if you use the other method, it will come up in your recorded list as the name of the show or movie you recorded. Also you can record 2 shows at the same time BUT you have to be watching one of them. I LOVE my DVR!
Edited for my for spelling!

That's why I asked about the make/model. My DVR only has one receiver, so I can't record two at once.... It's an older model, so it doesn't have a lot of newer features, but I also don't have to pay a monthly fee, since I got it during a transition period with DishNetwork, so I'm grandfathered in with no fees....

Re: DVR tips, tricks, hints...
OK...we have the box from Cablevision.
Now...I AM taping Greys and The Office at the same time tonight, however I have an event and won't be home to watch one of them while its recording. I may be, but not sure. I may get homne by 9:30. Its still gonna work, right?
Now I can automatically set it to tape a show everyday. Like Oprah at 4pm????
Thanks for all the tips, tirkcs...keep 'em coming!

Re: DVR tips, tricks, hints...
For 1 hr shows you need to have 15-20 minutes of lead time to FF ALL the commercials. It's about 10 minutes for 30 minute shows.
DVR will automatically record what you are watching live but not save it once a new show comes on-so if you want to be able to rewind and all that pause a live show.

No, if you want to watch an hour-long show that starts at 9, if you start watching it from the beginning of the show at 9:15, 9:20, you'll end at 10, like if it was live, but you can skip all the commercials.

Re: DVR tips, tricks, hints...
once you get use to it and realize you need more space to record all of your shows, because you are a total tv junkie, you will have to do what we did and get one for the den and bedroom.
Have Fun

YES!!! This is a good one...I used to miss the end of so many shows until I realized I needed to do this.
