Dyed my own hair and Product Rave - hair color! - UPDATED WITH PICS!! - TWO NEWER PICS in first post
My experience with dying my own hair for the first time...
So I've been going to the salon to get my hair dyed for years. My hair is naturally jet black and for years I was dark blonde with highlights and progressively went darker.
Late last year I went brown. I wanted a chocolate brown, NO RED. The problem is, my hair naturally has red tones, so my hair lady would do a number of things but still, it had a reddish tone which I was not thrilled with. And the more I washed it, the brassier it would get.
Well, my roots needed to be done and even though I was SUPER scared of really f*ing up my hair, I didn't really want to go sit for 6 hours at the salon (I have to get 2 color processes and then wash, roller set, then blow dry - I have thick, long hair). So I went to Duane Reade; it took me a while to decide on what to buy (I mean, there are SO many different brands, colors, etc), but I finally decided on something.
I bought two boxes of L'Oreal Superior Preference - #5A Medium Ash Brown hair dye. I picked an Ash color since I know that would help with getting rid of the red/orange/brassy tones. $10 per box.
I figured I might as well go for it. I read the directions, put on my gloves, mixed the dye and jumped right in. I had NO idea what I was doing (although I had seen my mom apply hair dye to her thin, short hair for years with that little tip bottle) but I went ahead. As I figured, one box was not nearly enough for all of my hair. I mixed the second box, worked it into the rest of my hair and waited a half hour. I made sure to massage the dye well from root to tips since I was afraid of having patches of the new color and patches of the old color. Nevermind that I was worried that my hair color would turn out orange!!!
When I get my hair dyed at the salon, my scalp is always BURNING at the top - it's so sensitive. I actually did not have any burning with the L'Oreal hair dye!!! Major plus!
Also, it didn't drip down my face or my neck like what happens at the salon. Another plus!
I know it says NOT to shampoo for 24 hours, but I didn't like the smell of the dye once I rinsed it with water, so I shampooed with my ION Color Defense Shampoo and then used the conditioner that came with the hair dye. Suuuuuuper silky! Man, I wish they sold that separately (especially since it was supposed to last for 6 weeks and I ended up having to use the ENTIRE tube because of my hair!).
I quickly dried my hair and noticed that it was definitely darker than before, but not TOO much darker. BUT, more importantly, THE RED WAS GONE! I know that sounds really silly, but it has always been SO hard to get the red out!!!
Once I straightened my hair with the In Styler (NOTE: This is the BEST invention EVERRRRRRR), I was really thrilled. It's been two days and it even looks a tad lighter now, definitely more ashy (aka NOT red) than before and four people at work have complimented me. My mom saw it and she was really impressed and said I shouldn't bother going to the salon to get it dyed anymore!!! Besides saving $$, the TIME saving factor is a HUGE plus (I mean, I can just do this on my own time and even dry/straighten later on depending on my schedule). Of course, I'm now afraid of going back to my hairdresser for my next cut or whatever since she'll know, but heck I've been going to her for 10 years and I'll just tell her we need to save money.
Soooo, that's my experience with dying my hair for the first time - with a major product rave for L'Oreal Superior Preference hair color!!!!!
PS: I was thinking of asking DH to take some pics tonight.
ETA: Here are some bad pics taken with my blackberry, but you get the idea of the color. Also, this is after I used the InStyler (but keep in mind it's been crazy humid so normally it looks better).
In this pic I think the lighting is off - the color is ashier I think.
ETA AGAIN: So I took a couple of pics with my regular camera since the blackberry pics were kinda sucky, lol. Here they are! Ignore that my hair is frizzy - I should have InStyled it again (or at least brushed it well! lol) before taking the pics.
This is the exact box I bought:

Have you seen the infomercials on it? Seriously, this has to be the best hair item I've ever purchased.
I used to use the MaxiGlide flat iron with the steam, and that was the only flat iron I could use to get my hair straight from curly (regular flat irons didn't take the kinks out). But the InStyler is WAY better.
I wash my hair, let it air dry (or if I don't want to wait hours for it to dry on its own, I blow dry it - but like with a paddle brush or one of those wide tooth brushes - just to get it dry). Once dry, I work in smallish sections from the bottom up, using the InStyler slowly (meaning I don't just run it through my hair, but rather take like about 10 seconds to go from root to tip of each hair section). I leave it for at least 3-5 seconds at the very tip of my hair to get it to curl under since I don't like the ends pin straight.
Since I have a lot of thick hair, it does take me a while to do my whole head, but once I'm done, my hair is straight, shiny, and BOUNCY! The ends are curled in, it moves great. When I used to use the Maxiglide or a regular flat iron, it would be TOO straight/dead for me. Sometimes I want that look, but for a day to day, I prefer more movement.
I reallllllllllly love the InStyler. I would highly recommend it.

lol, hijack away. You're the only one to respond so far anyway I really wish I remembered the price... unless they've changed it, then yes you have to buy two (but that's the only option so it's still the same price). Including everything like shipping and all that, I think it was $150??? I really don't remember exactly. I DO remember thinking, wtffffff if I could get just one, then I'd save like half, no? lol. But seriously, it was worth it!!! I mean I have a Sedu Flat iron which works great (but only after I've straightened my curly hair) and THAT was $200 alone!

That conditioner that comes with hair dye ( any brand) really is the best stuff ever. I don't know why all conditioner isn't like that!

I'm telling you, I've ALWAYS gone to the salon since I started dying my hair. My friend once tried to dye my hair with a box dye at her home and my hair came out ORANGE like Sunkist!!! So I NEVER ever tried to do it myself after that (I had to run to my hairdresser's that day and she was like, OMG WHAT DID YOU DO!?!? lol). Anywho, I figured I'd take a chance myself since now my hair isn't blonde and I figured I'd get the same results as the salon, but save money and time. Lo and behold - I didn't get those red undertones AND I saved time & money! lol. Definitely consider it and get an ASH color!!!

Re: Dyed my own hair and Product Rave - hair color! - UPDATED WITH PICS!!
I love the color! I may have to remember this when I go back to one color and no highlights!
So the Instyler really works? I have curly hair too and I can get it straight after letting it dry naturally but then it is stick/limp straight. And to dry and straighten it every day is so damaging.
I never believe this infomercial -- but to hear true testimony I think I may have to try it!

Re: Dyed my own hair and Product Rave - hair color! - UPDATED WITH PICS!! - TWO NEWER PICS in first post
Thanks guys!!
Takfad - once my hair is dry (you have to have dry or just about dry hair in order to use the InStyler so I either let it air dry or hit it with the blow dryer until its dry) it takes me about an hour to InStyle it. I have a lot of thick, long hair, so I know if someone has less or thinner hair it will be less time.
I've done it as fast as 45 minutes and it has taken me as long as an hour and 15 minutes - I tend to do it as I watch tv so it depends on how distracted I am!
Posted two new pics in the first post too!
