Dyeing hair at home?

Does anyone do this? I am starting to notice a bunch of grays are starting to pop up now (I'm 37). I don't want to start having to go to the salon all the time so I was wondering if there are any good, easy at home dyes I could use. Thanks!

I do, but it definitely doesn't come out as good as they do it in the salon, nor does it last as long "out of a box". You may end up in the same boat if you get it done professionally and it may be worth the money. Unless you have someone who can do it for you at home for free.

The key is even coverage and a good product. I buy mine at the beauty supply store and have my mom or my aunt (hair colorist) apply it. It lasts as long as the salon stuff would, and they get to the grays I can't get to myself, but I save a lot of $

I always do my own because I can't afford the salon, and don't have the time for that.

The key is to make sure you have the even coverage, and I always keep it as close to my natural color as possible.

The only thing I hate is after a few weeks, the color starts looking orange-y on me, but it's cheap enough to just do again.

I usually use Revlon. I think it's like 3 or 4 bucks at Target and there are frequently coupons in the Sunday paper.

Whenever I go to get a haircut, they tell me my color looks great so I must be doing it right .

I cut and dye my own hair because I have never found a stylist who did either exactly the way I want. I haven't had either done professionally in 12 years.

I've found that most of the "top shelf" drugstore brands work very well. I usually have to buy two or three bottles as my hair is just about down to my waist at its longest point. Depending on what color you're going for, I could probably give you some more specific tips.

Strangers randomly come up to me all the time and tell me I have awesome hair, so I guess I'm not totally screwing it up lol

I've been dying my hair since I was 18.... Found my first gray hair at 16 I have to dye it every 3-4 weeks... 4 weeks is pushing it... I buy revlpn colorsilk.... I also use revlon buttercream when on sale... This brand is cheaper than most others and it does a good job

I have been coloring my own hair for over 10 years: I started going grey in my mid 20s.

I use garnier #415 and it matchers my own hair color perfectly. The key is not to do anything too crazy but just to try to match your own color as close as possible, give or take a shade or two.

I went to Sallys Beauty and got a bowl & application brush.

I usually use Garnier Nutrisse.

Thanks everyone, I may try it since I am home for the summer. if it looks bad I don't have to go to work the next day lol.

I started going grey (white & silver too!) in my mid 20s as well. I use the nice and easy root touch up and it works really well. But every 3-4 months I have it done professionally cuz the color starts to get brassy and uneven. I used to only get it done professionally, but when I needed to cut back on $$, I felt that this worked well!
