Dying pet fish issue what to do?

My DD had a betta fish that died. DH did not want to tell her and wanted to get a replacement. She was about 5 1/2 at the time. I thought she should be told, we went with my plan and she freaked out and started bawling. Drew a lot of pics of the fish after and we got another fish. She seemed happy enough but every now and again speaks of the first fish. Now something is wrong with this fish. DD was 6 in July if that matters. I have tried to figure out what's wrong with the fish but it basically looks like it will not be alive much longer. I feel so bad watching this poor fish not acting right at all but that's beside the point. DH wants to just replace it without telling her. I don't know what to do at this point after her last reaction last year.

WWYD? To me, it doesn't seem right to not tell her since it's part of owning a pet of any kind and she's not 3 yrs old but really....I also don't feel so inclined to get another betta just to replace this one. She hardly gave it a look half the time.

Thoughts?

May not be the right thing, but I'd get to a pet store asap and buy the twin.

My DD (6) is sooooooo sensitive, I'd never hear the end of it.

Good Luck

I tend to agree. Most pets last a lot longer than fish do, so they are usually older when they pass.

Re: Dying pet fish issue what to do?

I don't know, my DD is 4 and just got her first pet, a beta fish, a month ago. When she got it, I told her they don't live that long but we are going to take good care of her and enjoy the fish everyday, blah blah blah. For the first few days, she kept asking if she was going to die soon. It was sad. Now she doesn't say it anymore and definitly loves the fish. However, I am on the fence about what to do if she died. I think I would tell her. Its a very hard lesson to learn in life, but unfortunatley one that has to be learned at some point. Id rather it be with a fish then a dog or something to start with. Good luck with your decision!
