Dying your hair.. Color question...
Ok, so I've been dying my hair at home the past 3 times cause it's cheaper and I hate sitting in the salon for a simple single process.
Anyway, my hair is very dark brown, but I've been dying it with "soft black". I need to dye it again, the grey is coming through, and you can actually see my hair lighter growing in. I think I want to go a shade lighter than "soft black", but how will it come out on the rest of my hair that is still "soft black"?
Hope that makes sense....

Re: Dying your hair.. Color question...
been there done that-I used to dye my hair "very dark brown" and it looked black. My grays were getting really bad and I was told by some that the dark color looked harsh. So, I gave myself highlights at home. They were a brownish red color. Then ,when the highlights were about 3 weeks old, I picked a new base color (I use gray solutions medium brown). I did my roots and then ran it through my ends for a few minutes (that way my highlights lost some of the red). Now, I always use the medium brown and highlight every now and then.

Re: Dying your hair.. Color question...
But if I go a lighter color than "soft black" on my new roots, what will happen to my hair that is still "soft black"? You know what I mean? Will it get darker than the soft black because i'm putting more color on it?

What do you use? Permanent colors actually lift your own color a little & then add the box color (I believe that is why you have to mix 2 things). The box should show what the color will look like on 2 or 3 shades of hair.
I think it will be fine ( Note: I am NOT a professional!), but you may want to call the # on the box.

Uggh- I hate that drippy feeling. I think you do need a new salon! I would always go back & forth between which was more anoying, doing it myself or getting it done.

The soft black will stay the same. It would be like using a brown crayon on black construction paper. The highlights will break up the soft black so that the lighter roots will blend in somewhat.

Re: Dying your hair.. Color question...
I'm not sure if the new color will lighten the soft black dyed hair. I used to use the permanent box hair dye at home also, but when I actually went to a salon to get color and highlights done (I wanted to go lighter), the stylist told me I should never use permanent color and it was going to take several trips to get it the color I wanted. However, my natural hair color is almost black, so that could make a difference also.

My natural color is almost black too.. it's very very dark, and the reason i used soft black was because the shade lighter looked lighter than my natural color.. (you know where you can compare the side of the box colors to your hair..it was lighter!!)
Uck, what a pain! I should prog just go to the salon... Now I want a deep dark chestnut brown I think...

Hmm...I would probably just go and have it done at a salon this time. Then any future time you want to dye it, it will be the lighter color already, and can pick up the same colors, you know?
