Dyslexia information
Is anyone here a pre school specialist or have experience with dyslexia? Just wondering about the age at which we look at signs to diagnose etc? It runs in my family and I'm seeing some very slight tendencies in my 3 1/2 year old. I'm not overly concerned but I wouldn't want to ignore anything either. Is there a certain evaluation that is done? i don't know where to begin. Perhaps my school district?

Re: Dyslexia information
Dyslexia is learning disability in the area of reading/writing. It is typically disanosed in school aged children over the age of 7. Its usually diagnosed after the child begins struggling with ELA in the classroom. Most schools offer reading support at the building level (AIS). If that intervention is not successful, a referal is made to the CSE and the building psych and special ed/resource room teacher does testing. Based on testing results and classrrom performance, a dianosis can be made. It's WAY too early to determine if a 3 1/2 year old is dyslexic because there is such a wide range in development under the age of 7 and they only begin reading instruction in Kindergarten. What signs of dyslexia have you noticed?

Re: Dyslexia information
I agree. I do CPSE evals and although you can sometimes see signs of "something" at 4 on the IQ test in combination with the speech eval weaknesses, it's almost never clear as to what's going on...unless the child is very low cognitively overall.

Re: Dyslexia information
OK thanks! I have no concerns about DC's learning abilities otherwise it's just certain things.
DC recently started writing. When writing "mom" DC will write the 2 m's and then go back and put in the o. When looking at 2 digit numbers, always reads them from right to left. Sometimes reverses lower case b and d which I understand is VERY common but with the rates of incidence among children with a dyslexic parent, I really try to pay attention because I feel early intervention is key with almost everything. So thank you, I'll probably start to do some research, but deifnitely won't start worrying until after 4!

In a 3 year old, all this is very common and nothing to be alarmed about. Most school districts won't even test for dyslexia until after 1st grade b/c even in first grade, students do that!. The fact that your dc is writing and reading 2 digit numbers is advanced as that is not even a skill that anyone would even test for until late 4 early 5 year olds.
