Ear discharge?? UPDATED
When I was putting on DD coat this evening at day care, I noticed that her ear was FULL of yellow goop. I cleaned it out and within an hour it was full again. She has no fever and is alittle cranky. She's had a TON of ear infections, but I've never seen this.
I will call the ped first thing, but for peace of mind has anyone else seen this? If so, what was it?
UPDATE: Just got back from ped - another double ear infection and ruptured ear drum This is the 6th ear infection since September.

Re: Ear discharge??
Just my guess but it could be just a really bad build up of ear wax! The babies have this a lot and the dr. said it was good that the wax released on its own!

Re: Ear discharge??
Since she has a lot of ear infections I would call your Dr since it didn't stop coming out of her ear once you cleaned it. Just to be safe.

I agree. I think it may just be a build-up but that can cause problems too.
DON'T (I repeat) DON'T use q-tips inside her ear to scoop it out. You might think you are helping, but it can jam it into her ear drum.
As I am typing, I realize how gross that sounds, but from one who lived through that kind of stuff when I was little, I hate to see Hannah go through that!
Feel better Hannah!

Re: Ear discharge??
Well it could be ear wax build up or it could be an infection coming out. My son was just sick about a month ago and he had a really bad ear infection. When it became unclogged it started to just come out and it was like relief for him. The stuff just continued to come out for at least 5 days straight. Whatever it is I hope she feels better soon. Let us know what happens tomorrow at the doctors.

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
poor baby
Has your ped. told you to use Mineral Oil to clean out her ears when she doesn't have an infection? That's what we use. Sometiems, if it's bad, we use Debrox, which is just stronger stuff that really cleans out that wax.

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
Same thing happened to my DD. She kept getting repeat ear infections. On a flight home from Florida (she had just finished taking antibiotics for an infection) he ear drum ruptured. She got tubes the following month and has been ear infection free since then.

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
I'm so sorry. The ear infection where Ryan's eardrum ruptured was his last - we got tubes and he's been ear infection free since then. They really do the trick. Has your Dr. suggested that? My main thing was having him on antib's so much. to you I know it wears on you after a while

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
Oh geez...has your ped. referred you to a pediatric ENT. if not, it may be time to go. I had severe ear infection when i was little and wound up with a hearing problem. Luckily I am ok now (sometimes your ear drums can heal themselves after awhile) but you dont want to take any chances.

OMG-I hope she feels better soon I know how painful ear infections can be for mommy and baby. My son had the tubes put in twice and they really do the trick. Has your Dr. suggested that??

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
Thanks everyone.
We've seen an ENT. He, of course, was ready to put the tubes in that week. My ped, however, will not sign off on the surgery since she is able to be healthy for short periods inbetween. He said tubes are often done too quickly. They should be used when the child has consistent/chronic ear infections for 3 or 4 months.
She gets better for like a week inbetween. I've done some reading on it and its very mixed. I'd say 50% agree with him and the other 50% would have used the tubes by now.
I'm getting to the point, where I may insist he sign off on it. To me this is chronic. He feels she's starting to outgrow it on her own.
ETA the other challenge is she's never healthy long enough to do the surgery. I did schedule it once and she didn't pass the pre-exam!! This is the 2nd consecutive infection where she ruptured her eardrum. I just feel so awful for her.

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
6 ear infections since September sounds chronic to me. As a speech pathologist I would recommend the tubes. She's at a critical age for learning language and you want to make sure she's hearing what she should be. I hope she's feeling better!!

Re: Ear discharge?? UPDATED
The anesthesia they administer to do the procedure. The entire thing takes like 5 minutes but there's always that risk with anaesth. (sp)
