Ear infection question...
So, I know why Matthew has been waking up at night. He has some fluid in his ears. The PED gave me a presciption and said to use it only if he is really in pain. He has been a little whiny and clingy. She wants to see his next week to see if it goes away on its own. My MIL came with me to help out with thier well visit and I got into a discussion, and she said to give it to him, but Im a little more conservative. Have your DC's had fluid and you waited to see if it went away on its own??

Re: Ear infection question...
Steven has fluid in his ears. I use mineral oil. That usually helps.
this one time, it didn't help his one ear so the Doc said to get Deborox. We did it to his ear one hour before bath for 4 days. He seems to be better.
It is an OTC "ear draining solution." Are you willing to try something like that?

she gave me amoxicillin, I guess I can call about that. I will only give it to him if he is really in pain

The amoxicillin is an antibiotic and clears up the infection. The Deborox is a solution that you just put a few drops in the ear and it will drain it.
I would call and definately make sure he doesn't have the infection. If he does, then I would do the amox. If it's just fluid, I would do the mineral oil or deborox. I am by no means a professional, I'm just saying what my experience was.
Good luck!

Thats strange - amoxicillin is for an infection. I would give it to him if he seems uncomfortable - did she say his ear was red?

no, she just said there was fluid in both ears and to only give it to him if he is really uncomfortable. Every now and then he gets whiny and wakes up at night crying, last night he just woke up at 3am, I thought it was teething, but she said it is probably both teething(his top gums are very swollen) and said they will pop in hopefully by next week. So, I will hold off on the medicine. I go next Thursday to see if it gets any better

I agree with Tracy, that is strange that she gave amox. and it's not an infection.
I think you are doing the right thing by holding off.
Hopefully he will be better soon!

I wouldn't give it to him if it were me. Hayley had some fluid after an ear infection and they didn't me a new prescription, we just waited to see if it went away.

Re: Ear infection question...
I wouldn't give the antibiotic unless I was sure it was an ear infection. If he's uncomfortable, especially since he may also be teething, i would be more likely to give motrin or tylenol. If you think he's uncomfortable, either call the ped and ask whether you should go in again to see if his ear is infected, or if you can give him pain meds.
Also another thing, if you do give him the antibiotic, you can't stop if he feels better, you will have to continue the treatment for the entire time period you were prescribed, or else if he does have an infection you could not kill them all, and possibly breed even stronger bacteria that will not be killed by the amoxicillin next time.

i agree with this. i also think it's strange that your ped would prescribe an antibiotic if there was no infection and say to give it if he's in pain. the pain isn't caused by infection, it's caused by the pressure of the fluid in the ear. i remember one of my audiology professors saying that just giving an antibiotic won't clear up the fluid in the ear. it can get rid of the infection, but the fluid could still be in there. she said antibiotics should always be prescribed with a decongestant, which will help clear the fluid. that's probably not an option for an infant though. hope he's feeling better!

I agree, I also wanted to say that it annoys me when ped's do this. By this, I mean, leave it up to you. The baby is 9 months old - he can't tell you, "mommy I'm in pain" all he can do is be cranky and whiny and cry. We take our babies to doctors for answers - not to put the ball back in our court!
Diane - I am glad he slept thru the night. Hopefully he is feeling better.
