Ear Infections - Do all docs rx antibiotics?
With all this chat about ear infections, i'm curious to know...
What are the treatments your pediatricians prescribe? Is it antibiotics always...first? Or are there other things prescribed?

in my experience, they always treat with antibiotics. my ped does try to change up with antibiotic to lessen likelihood of resistance
we have seen augmentin, amox, zithromax and omnicef

yup, every time he gets one we get a script. Since some of those are close to each other he can't give us the same antiobiotic from the last one.

Yes, always starts w/ scripts (amox. for DS). I think the infection would spread if it isn't killed first. Some have been prescribed drops for the pain in addition to antibiotics.

Re: Ear Infections - Do all docs rx antibiotics?
I see a pediatrician who is a homeopathic and his recommendation is to get an adjustment from the chiropractor and to use a supplement. The adjustment is not your neck cracking chiropractic adjustment if I understand it correctly it is more like doing some pressure points to alleviate the fluid in the ear. Just figured I'd throw this out there that there is another option to antibiotics.
Edited for spelling...sorry

Antibiotics are a last resort in our case. A lot of ear infections go away on their own, but if the ped feels that the kids aren't going to get better on their own he'll prescribe it. DS has been treated maybe once or twice for ear infections and he's going to be 3 in April.

If your child has 103-104 fevers for 3 or more days from an ear infection, IMO your child should be put on antibiotics. My kids are prone to ear infections and I don't like playing games with them because the truth is ear infections that go untreated can cause long term damage, even recurrent ear infections that are treated.

Re: Ear Infections - Do all docs rx antibiotics?
From May to Sept Ds had one ear infection after another; and it was always antibiotics first.
these particular months DS was teething terribly and always with the hands in the mouth. So between the teething affecting the ears/nose/throat, and constant hand in mouth and germs, it was a recipe for disaster.
DS stopped with the hands in his mouth just before his 1st bday and has been ear infection free for now.
