early intervention through school district?
my ds is 19 months and doesnt say any words at all. my ped gave me the # to call and it went through county dept of health, then to just kids who evaluated him. He is significantly delayed but they did not qualify him for services mostly because of his age they said. now everyone is telling me I should have gone through the school district. does anyone know if it would be the same process? I was thinking you would only go through the school district if they are 3 and older?

The school district, Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) handles ages 3 through 5 years. You can get your DS reevaluated by EI if you still have concerns. Usually kids qualify for speech if they have no words by 2 years if that is the only delay.

Before 3 is through EI. My son got denied at 2 then got speech at 2.5. We just transitioned him through the school district when he turned three.

Re: early intervention through school district?
My DS was also denied at 22 months because of his comprehension levels being normal for that age range (18-24 months), even though he had very few words. The evaluators suggested we have him re-evaluated at 25 months, when he would be in the next age category, and that he would likely qualify at that time. We had him evaluated again last month at 26 months and he qualified without question for speech, and also for special ed services. We start both next week. My advice is to call back the county the day he turns 25 months and ask to be evaluated again. Good luck!

School district starts at age 3, before tha you go through the county and if you did not like the evaluation you can always ask for anothe evaluation.
