East Rockaway and Hewlett?

Hi all,
DH and I are condo/co-op/house hunting right now and it looks like these 2 areas have affordable places that look nice. On MLS the school listings are good. I'm curious though about what you know about the areas... you girls always have the inside scoop and honest advice which I appreciate! :) I don't want to waste our weekend making appts and looking if the areas are definitely not good....

TIA!
Jennifer

Re: East Rockaway and Hewlett?

I just moved to East Rockaway...I love it. It seems to be an up and coming town. I am over by the church off of Atlantic, there are a lot of cute co-ops over there. The maintenance is super high (1000 a month on some of them) BUT they are affordable---we looked at a 3 bedroom going for 289,000 and it was HUGE! We wound up getting a house...

The high school is small, really small. I went to West hempstead High School and their was 700-800 kids total and this school is smaller (I don't think they have a football team) but I hear it's pretty good. I know some people who had their kids go there and I never hear it's bad. There are some areas of ER that go to Lynbrook schools (one of the best on the Island), you see the housing prices jump like 40-50k with this.

Hewlett, I am not so sure about.

Hope this helps.

my brother in law lives in east rockaway and it's very nice; a little congested for my taste but the homes are well kept and it has a nice "town" feel to it. Hewlett Harbor is beautiful. I don't know much about the schools in either town though.

congested? may I ask what you mean by that? Down by the water are the beach bungalows, which I totally see what you mean...but on the block and in the area that I bought (closer to Hewlett) I am on a lot 60x175 and i found that the property sizes were spaced apart more that some other nassau county towns?

I grew up in ER and my parents still live there. Small town, every one knows everyone. There is an area called Bay Park with a lot of smaller, nice homes and the area by Hewlett, which is more $$. As Kelly said, the HS is small, only about 400-500 in 7th-12th grade.... I went to St. Raymond's and then onto a private HS, so I can't really comment too much on the HS.

ETA: they do have a football team, I know the coach Chat Icon

I can give you more info if you have specific questions. My grandparents lived there, so do my aunts and uncles, etc. Just FM me.

Re: East Rockaway and Hewlett?

I always heard that Hewlett was a great district, but I have heard recently that the orthodox community has been sending their children to private schools and fighting down budget votes. Not really sure of the specifics, but something to look into.

Re: East Rockaway and Hewlett?

My SIl just moved form East Rockaway 9 (closer to Hewlett by ER Jewish Center)) to Hewlett Harbor.. She loves it there-- her children go to Lynbrook schools... Her ER house had decent amount of land but her new home in Hewlett Harbor is just ridiculous..

Where she lives it is not congested but I do agree driving to Hewlett and ER, I always feel that it is more congestion than where I grew up on the Northshore.....

Re: East Rockaway and Hewlett?

I am an ERHS alumniChat Icon . I love it here and always have. Yes, the HS is VERY small (I graduated in '88 with 96 pp)and everyone knows everyones business but it is a great town. They do have a football team, baseball team, basketball team and now I believe soccor and lacrosse (I believe they are joined with Malverne for these two sports but I'm really not sure, we didn't have them when I was in school). We are in the process of moving to Oceanside b/c they do have a better SD and DH really wanted our kids to go to a bigger schoolChat Icon Chat Icon (he went to Kellenberg which is huge) but I will definately miss living in ER (although my mom will still live here).

I don't know too much about Hewlett but any questions on ER ask awayChat Icon .

I too am an ERHS alumni....actually graduated with Betty's brother....we had 80 in our graduating class. I think being in a small school was great. Any questions feel free to FM.

Thanks for all the input!
We saw a great place that we liked today in Hewlett...right near St. Joseph's Church... we drove around the area and it seemed really nice... I didn't see anything that I didn't like... it's right near Hewlett HS.... I know ppl had mixed reviews about Hewlett so I'd love to hear more about that area if anyone knows...

That is a great area around there. Very nice. My dermatologist is there, on Broadway. This is the area off East Rockaway Road (Main Street)? Oh, and Hewlett HS has a good reputation.

I was speaking more in terms of the town and the traffic around where my BIL lives in east rockaway; not neccesarily how spaced out the houses are.
