Better than that - read Three Cups of Tea....that man is awe-inspiring. She seems like a selfish you-know-what after reading about Greg Mortenson.

Hated hated hated this book --- sorry. IMO she is totally self-centered and self-absorbed. Nothing too interesting.
And PS I agree with Gerty.

This is her experience and story...that's why you feel she is self-centered. It wasn't originally written for it to be a book I believe...it was from her journal. As someone else stated she published it for people who might benefit from her experience and want to change their life or going through a change.

Re: Eat Pray and Love
i loved this book. she was on oprah again today and i am really amazed by her.
i don't think she is selfish. i really admire what she did for herself. i have learned a ton about myself through the book and really feel like it has given me an opportunity to look inward...
i also started a journal on "what i really really really want" and my "happy moments each day" as she recommended the first time she was on oprah. it just helps me focus on my life and how i can benefit.
i think it's really about living your best life and i am all about that!!
sorry for rambling.....

Re: Eat Pray and Love
I have totally mixed feelings on it...I thought at first she was a little too self absorbed as well, but I can see now how if written for yourself how it would come across a certain way , and some of the things she has written really moved me....yet Im still not liking HER as a person much, but the ideas and ideals and some experiences are great and I find myself remembering certain passgaes about God and its inspiring to here.
Its almost like I wish a different peson had wrote it? B/C some of the sarcasm/her humor comes across as disbelief in what shes saying on my part.

I agree with this. I am not done with the book but I am taking a lot away from the book. I guess I can see if someone isn't having any rough patches in their life why they might not appreciate the book but for me it has some points that hit close to home. My friends gave it mixed reviews as well though. Some loved it and some hated it.

I am still reading it... At times I love it and at times I hate it. I can definately see taking away some things from this book but I feel Oprah hyped it way too much for me...

See...no matter what I thought she was self-serving. She ended the marriage, she was seeing someone else - yet she blamed her ex for her problems. Even when she went on her sabbatical, it was all about her. I totally understand that it was a life experience book - and I appreciate it for that. I just felt that it was not a book that helped me grow or see the world in a new light. There are other books that have done this in a much better way...and I have had plenty of rough patches in my life - including a bad marriage...I just felt that she blamed everyone else for her problems and ran away from things instead of dealing with them.
Again, JMO and I have no problems with others loving the book...it just didn't sit well with me.

That's interesting because I felt just the opposite. I guess it's interesting to see how differently people can perceive a book. (I hope this comes across right, I don't mean any of this in an argumentative way).

That's one of my favorite things about discussing books - how differenly people can interpert the books, characters, themes, etc. I miss being in a book club!
