Re: Eating Fish in Pregnancy boosts brain power!
fish allergy here...
But omega-3's are definitely important for brain development and function. Actually, the FDA is trying to convince OB's to take omega-3's seriously, and have all their patients take supplements, much like folic acid. (FDA recommmends 300 mg DHA daily for preggo's)
Since I can't eat ANY fish, I take 400mg a day of an algae-derived DHA supplement (Expecta-made for preggo's like us... has the same DHA as formula )
I'm hoping that compensates for the lack of omega 3's in my diet.

Flaxseed, walnuts and tofu are also good sources of Omega-3.

I don't have an allergy but HATE all fish! I also take Expecta supplements. I hope they are doing their job!

flaxseed and tofu are not so good for preggo's though.... they have phytoestrogens that can mess with our already off-kilter hormone levels....
Also, both are not that rich in DHA. they have the precursor alpha linolenic acid.... which many people don't convert too easily to DHA. (also, omega 3's are killed by heating, so cooked tofu doesn't work too well)
Love walnuts though!
can you tell I was rather concerned about my dietary deficiency and read-up on it a weeee bit too much?

I hope so too! my concern about expecta (And all DHA supplements) is that DHA is not that stable at room temp. I hope the DHA isn't completely broken down in those darn pills! (since the vitamin industry has minimal regulation by the FDA, I don't think anyone ever checks to make sure that the DHA in a store bottle actually is still there....)

Interesting. As a semi-vegetarian I haven't noticed any changes due to consuming tofu/tofu products.
My prenatal has a high dose of DHA but it is a fish-derivative.
