Echogenic focus

I just spoke to my ob. My AFP results were normal, and almost all of the 16-week sono results were normal as well (I had it on Saturday at 17 weeks). The only thing she mentioned was that the sonographer saw a spot on the baby's heart, called an echogenic focus. She said that in the absence of any other genetic markers, it is totally normal, and nothing to worry about. I read online that it occurs in about 3-5% of normal pregnancies and that it doesn't cause any health problems. Did anyone else have this?

Overall, I am really happy and relieved with the test results. I was nervous b/c I saw that the femur only measured at the 10th percentile, but my doctor said it was absolutely fine!

Can't wait for my 20 week sono in two weeks!

Re: Echogenic focus

My DD also had this at our Level II. My doc and the MFMs at LIJ were not concerned b/c there were no other markers. They said if I wanted I could go for a fetal echocardiogram and/or an amnio if we really wanted to but DH and I chose not to b/c every doc we spoke to said it was unecessary. Apprently it is VERY common. Since it took us a long 3 years to conceive our miracle baby we decided against extra testing. DD is now 6 weeks old and we couldn't be happier!

I hear ya! 2.5 years to conceive our LO, so I'm avoiding any extra testing as well. So glad to hear that your DD is doing well, and that there were no related problems. Chat Icon

Re: Echogenic focus

Ds had one. I went for a fetal echo and everything was fine. The Ped cardiologist said she has seen babies with 10 that turned out to be fine. It can be a calcium deposit or cyst and since there were no other markers it was nothing to worry about. It went away on it's own I think by 36 weeks.
