Effective June 1 - no more free headsets on Jetblue
Headsets for Watching DIRECTV® Programming Each seat is equipped with a standard mini-headset jack to enjoy our complimentary DIRECTV® and other in-flight entertainment. We recommend customers bring their own headsets for the best experience. Customers who forget to bring a headset may purchase a premium headset for $1 from dispenser located at JetBlue gates in the airport. These headsets can be re-used on future JetBlue flights. Upon request, JetBlue offers individually wrapped disposable headsets onboard at no charge until June 1, 2008.

You cant tell me that the 8cents that the airline pays to get these headsets is what is breaking the bank for them!!
I would think the negative vibes people get from having to pay for them WAY outweigh the cheap cost of buying them in bulk.

I agree - but cutting costs in this manner is probably better than doing it any other way.
Besides...who doesn't have headphones on a plane!?!?

ITA
And if by chance you forget your headphones, you only have to pay a $1 to get ones to enjoy the in-flight entertainment.

They are actually doing it an an environmental initiaive, to reduce waste since 90% of those headsets end up in the garbage after one use, plus think of all the bags.

Even more reason to just give them out free.. most people probably have their own anyway!! My point was that this really can't be cutting significant costs. I'd like to see the numbers. The money they are losing by giving them out free, not the tremendous profit they will be making selling them for $1.
ETA: they really should just increase the flights by 50 cents and not make headlines for charging for headphones.

Re: Effective June 1 - no more free headsets on Jetblue
I am starting to get real disappointed with jetblue. They used to be so unique as far as airlines were considered. Snacks on planes, the TV's, leather seats, and my favorite was if the fare went down you got the difference in credit.
Now they charge $2 a bag if you do curbside check in, getting rid of the free headsets, charging extra if you want a seat with more legroom, and if you do a fare adjustment you get charged a fee.
Their fares arent as low as they used to be either. I've been checking for myself to go in June and I've not seen a great difference.

I have to admit, when offered free headphones, it is much easier than rifling through my carry-on to find the headphones I always travel with.

when Jetblue first started they were a great airline with brand new planes so they could spend $ on the consumers rather than the planes, now after all these years of use, they now have an older fleet that requires maintenance and new parts. (DH is an airline mechanic)
