Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too! I totally understand tipping restaurant servers and hair stylists, most are underpaid, have no benefits and depend on tips. I generously tip them.
But teachers and most other full time school staff (and I'll throw in sanitation workers, mail carriers etc) make a decent living wage with benefits in most cases. So I say all this tipping and gifting is out of hand! It feels very much like a keeping up with the Joneses mentality.
I agree. I contribute to the class gift and that's it. They get paid a salary to "take care" of my child.
Actually, that's not correct. Your child's teacher is paid to teach. The "care" part is done for free and is paid for in hugs, pictures colored, smiles and enthusiasm.
Teachers aren't required to:
hug a sad child
Wipe away tears
Listen to fears and worries
Solve social problems
Provide snack if it's forgotten
Celebrate birthdays and milestones
Cheer at concerts and plays
But they do.
The list goes on, and those are the reasons I give an additional gift.
 I agree! So many teachers go above and beyond teaching curriculum and I appreciate that so much! It's comforting to know the person my child spends 6 hours a day with does more than teach curriculum.

I give amazon gift cards plus some other personalized stationary etc to my Kid's teachers. I also give smaller gifts to their special area teachers, the nurses and the receptionist. I also personally write a thank you note to their teachers thanking them for all that they did for my child during the year.
I do it because I love my kids' teachers. I honestly dont know how they do it every day. Sure they get paid for it but like someone else posted on here they do a lot more than teach.

yes crashing, but I agree with you, IT's over kill on LI with the gifting. This why so many parents are stressed out, keeping up with the jones. I hear it all the time from friends.
It makes it hard for those who cannot afford to contribute to the class fund and add something extra.
I am a class parent and can attribute that MOST teachers go above and beyond, and I've also seen the flip side of teachers that do the bare minimum. I don't keep up with the Jones', never have, never will. The gift I give their teachers is for anytime my Kindergartener missed me at school and she gave him a huge hug and held his hand. Or anytime my 3rd grader with SPD was having an anxious moment over the thought of sitting for too long or taking a timed test his teacher spotted it and reassured him that not only would it okay but that she would sit beside him until it was over is why I give a gift. The teachers (with the exception of one) have all been amazing with my children. They become a piece of our family. That is why at the end of the year I am okay with giving them a $20 gc to where ever in addition to the $10 class gift. But I will also say teachers never expect it or act as though they are owed something. And they are usually very thankful with just a thank you so much. Now tipping the mailman at christmas as well as the garbage men is to me TOO MUCH!

If someone doesn't want to contribute to a class gift or give $ for a teacher gift, sending a letter to the principal in support of the teacher is also a nice gesture.

I will give her an extra little something because I love her & my son loves her. She made his K experience wonderful. She is stern but caring. He knows he has to follow the rules but can tell her if he is upset. She understands him very well, like almost as well as I do. I just think he was lucky enough to get a wonderful teacher this year & she works so hard for her class. He has learned so much from her and I want to show my appreciation to her.
