Engorgement Question

This question is for those who have already had kids.
When the milk comes in and you are engorged, how long does that last and how painful is it?

I took a BF class and that part of it is making me nervous.

Re: Engorgement Question

Not sure if this will be helpful or not. I guess every one is different. I have BI and I chose not to BF. My breasts were killing me my sports bras helped a bunch and frozen bags of peas. The pain lasted about a week from the time I came home from the hospital. GL

Re: Engorgement Question

Engorgement came for me pp day #4. I would pump for a few minutes just to get relief then stop. By 1mth my milk finally regulated.

Re: Engorgement Question

I had our baby, and 4 days later, my boobs hurt. I think the milk was trying to come in. It lasted for less than a week. But it felt like tiny metal sticks poking me all over. If I grazed a boob with an arm, it would send painful stinging throughout the boob.

Re: Engorgement Question

my milk came in on day 5...my baby was so lazy and not an eater. My supply was huge and he wasn't eating.

That combination lead to engorgement. The LCs helped me. I rented a hospital grade pump and pumped 15 minutes every 3 hours.

If you take care of it, it should not last long, make it a priority.

You have to make time to get in the shower and massage it.

REST is the #1 cure. My left boob was HUGE for about a week. I laid down one night, baby finally slept a few hours straight...with that, my boob completely drained while I slept.

So, now that I know...if it happens to me again, I would pump out a ton of bottles, have anyone come into my home who wants to feed my baby...take a hot shower and put myself to sleep.

Engorgement is uncomfortable and it makes it really hard for the baby to latch, but it isn't hell. Its a problem you need to attend to, but don't fear it. Look at it this way...if you become engorged, your supply is going to be great.

Re: Engorgement Question

1st night home after c/s (day4), my milk came in bigtime and I became engorged. I wound up with a fever and the chills. I pumped for a while and by the morning was pretty much fine!

Engorgement and night sweats.
They go hand in hand.

Mine lasted about one day. I didn't pump because I didn't want to over-stimulate my milk, but I did encourage DS to eat (he was always a great eater and didn't need much encouragement). Warm washcloths and warm showers also helped.

Same with me. My milk came in full-force the first night home and my boobs hurt like crazy - pins and needles and VERY hard. I pumped in the morning a few times and that took care of it! Even now if my boobs are too full, I will pump and freeze the milk (I am starting to stock pile for when I go back to work in 4 weeks).

BTW - I LOVE THE MEDELA PUMP IN STYLE ADVANCE!! It's my best friend!!!
