Enrichment ideas?
I will be doing an after school enrichment class for 8 weeks from October -December once a week with 1st graders for one hour. Last year, I did a reading circle and BINGO fun. Does anyone have anjy other ideas that might be fun for after school? The parents pay for this so I'd like them to get their money's worth!

Re: Enrichment ideas?
where do you teach? if its nycdoe you can do picture books to enter in the Ezra Jack Keats bookmaking competition. I would also consider doing science experiments and a lot of hands on learning activities that extend the curriculum they learn during the day, not neccessarily extra stuff.

Re: Enrichment ideas?
just brainstorming (I have never done enrichment with 1st grade):
-Charlotte Awards are 4/2012, you could do something getting the kids involved with that.
-Caldecott is a little trickier since there aren't any nominations, but I do find this blogster to have good predictions.
-beginning research. research is big in my district and 1st grade is a great place to start. An "All About" ____________ book? Rookie Readers and Pebble books are great for this level of research. You can even bring in beginning citations (author, title), use of index/TOC, etc

Re: Enrichment ideas?
Card games teach logic, number & numeracy skills & cooperative work. Best yet - they offer a fun alternative to t.v. & video screens!
