ER Visits for Children (just something to keep in mind)

I don't work in a hospital but have been there enough times with my kids to know that some places do not have the expertise to deal with children.

I just read Charly's updated post on Hannah & it broke my heart that she was pricked & prodded so many times. It brought me right back to when we brought Maddie in for a spinal tap & they gave her SIX spinal taps before I said "No more.". They couldn't get a "good sample" of spinal fluid because it got contaiminated with blood. Turns out they didn't have pediatric needles.Chat Icon

Yesterday I was speaking to my co-worker whose daughter was born with a benign brain tumor. Her daughter is fine now but has a shunt in her head. Anytime she gets a severe headache or ear infection, they have to head to the ER.

She said she always goes to Schneider's Children's Hospital and no matter what always asks for someone from pediatrics to come down to put in the IV, take blood, etc.

They are the ones that are used to the tiny veins. They are the ones who have the expertise with children.

Just something to have in the back of your mind should you ever wind up in the ER with your child - and many prayers that none of you ever do.Chat Icon Chat Icon

VERY good points...

Just want to add that you shouldn't be afraid to speak up, even if the medical staff seems adamant or overly confident. I have had alot of surgeries/hospital admissions and I too have very small veins. Nobody is allowed to come near me unless they have experience with that and no matter how many times they insist, they are not allowed to put a needle into my hand (which is one of the preferred spots). I can't tell you how many problems I have had so now I open my mouth. Usually they are accommodating if you explain to them enough times. Chat Icon

Re: ER Visits for Children (just something to keep in mind)

Very good advice.

I know how true this is from when my son had RSV when he was just 6 weeks old. My ped works out of LIJ, why they didn't just send up to Schneider's I don't know. Watching them try to find a vein on a 6 week old was beyond heartbreaking, I finally couldn't control myself and snatched him up off the table. I never had to go to the ER with such a young child before and had no idea what we were in for....thinking about it brings tears to my eyes still.

Yes, yes, YES! We are the best and only advocates for our children. You'd think the ER would have common sense to treat babies/children accordingly, but it's not always the case. I could not agree w/this more and have experienced it first hand with ds.

I always take Andrew to Winthrop because they have the pediatric ward. They are great. Def never be afraid to stand up for your child. If something doesn't seem right say it.

That's where we went for DS' RSV a few weeks ago. They deal with children and have a yard dedicated to them.

We picked out Ped to be affiliated with Winthrop for this very reason.

Meanwhile, I agree with the OP. YOU are in charge of your DC. If it does not feel right, ask questions. Don't hesitate to challenge people/Dr.

Re: ER Visits for Children (just something to keep in mind)

This is such great advice. Thankfully we never had to go the emergency room- she was directly admitted by her ped when she had RSV so I have no idea about this stuff. Great advice, Barb. Thanks.

Re: ER Visits for Children (just something to keep in mind)

keep in mind ladies thatif your DC needs a IV that it is not a easy thing for a nurse or DR to get the IV or blood sample. There veins are so small and usually their arm or legs are so chubby its hard toget a IV. Its not an exact science. But yes its ok to stick up for your child and have the medical staff take a break. Its evenharder when your child is dehydrated

Re: ER Visits for Children (just something to keep in mind)

Great advice.... We went through the same with Jayden when he was 2.5 weeks old and we had to bring him back to the hospital after a 2 week stay in NICU. In the ER, the nurse pricked him 3 times and I finally requested that they get a nurse from Pediatric NICU. You'd think at a Children's hospital all the nurses could draw blood, but I've learned when it's an infant/toddler to request a NICU nurse.

Re: ER Visits for Children (just something to keep in mind)

great advice!

Good Sam has a seperate ER for peds and we didn't have any issues when Rachel had to be admitted at 3 days old. The ped nurses warned us it might take a try or two to get the IV in, but they got it in on the first try.

Honestly, I'm surprised that hospitals would have non-peds doctors/nurses work on children.

New Hyde Park.

They are also affiliated with NSUH Manhasset.

That's why I was so adamant about delivering at NSUH Manhasset even though it was pretty far from me. Their NICU is larger and affilated with Schneider's in case DC's ever needed it (twins run a 50% chance of being in the NICU) and it turns out DD did. She saw only the leading pediatric specialists in the area.

Had I delivered at my local hospital she would have been transported to NSUH Manhasset and I would have been with DS at our local hospital... no thanks.

After our experience, it's NSUH Manhasset/Schneider's for us for anything serious.

Noah was at Good Sam with the rsv/bronchiolitis and in the seperate Childs ER and they were a dream, NO issues with the IV etc and very accomadating. They got us a stretcher bed to allow Noah to sleep with us on the bed since he was scared of the crib.
