Re: Ergghhh-what do I do?
Can you get some soundproof panels and put them up on the walls near the drums? I think they sell them at Home Depot. Just something to deaden the noise.
I am a renter and I wouldn't complain about some kid banging on the drums a few minutes a day during regular hours. It's not like he's practicing with his band.

although i understand why you would want RJ to enjoy his drums as much as possible i also think it's important to teach him to respect others... and for me that would mean explaining to him that because you live in an apartment the drums have to go to grandma's where they will not disturb the neighbors.
IMO- I am teaching him to be respectful of others- when I explain why we are only allowed to have the drum sticks at certain times of the day

ETA: i say this not knowing, obviously, how loud the drums are when he plays - but i have friends who play drums and i know that the noise, even for an hour or two, can be really aggravating.
Did you read the whole thread??? The child is maybe playing for an hour or 2 over the course of an entire week!
hey take it easy - you wanted non-parent opinions so i gave mine.
if it's just this one neighbor who has a problem - and he's playing his DJ music at the same time - then no, i don't think you should bring the drums to your MIL's house.
but i am speaking STRICTLY as an apartment resident. i would not allow drums in my home for my child to play with because i understand the potential for them to become an issue. and yes, i would be irritated if i heard a kid playing drums when i was home from work, trying to relax, even if it's only for 1-3 hours a week.

Re: Ergghhh-what do I do?
Im sure they saw them come in- but I think they might here them- but it couldn't possibly be very loudly (I mean they live upstairs not next door)
When you put everything into perspective
-The fact no one is playing until @ least 4/4:30 on weekdays and only until 7 on weeknights
-That on the weekends he gets the sticks after 10- but he takes 2 naps a day (for a total of 2-4hrs) and most of the time we are out and about shopping or whatever and then again- sticks go away at bedtime (7pm)
-The drum set was placed in our living room (which backs no bedrooms- and our ceiling is upstairs LR floor)
- And that since he is only 2 and his attention span is so short- when he plays its only for a few MINUTES-
I can not fathom- that we are being disrespectful at all-
ACTUALLY aside from abiding by the "rules" of the complex- we are going above and beyond to be considerate of others.

Re: Ergghhh-what do I do?
i can honestly see where you are coming from. from a parent's perspective (which i do not yet have) it does seem like RJ is not making much of a ruckus at all, and a lot less than your DJ neighbor does, who is the only one complaining.
however, like i said, you asked for a non-parental perspective, which i gave. i am also an apartment-dweller, so i gave that perspective as well.
i am sorry if you don't agree with me, but you were looking for perspective, right? not for everyone to just agree with you?
given the circumstances, i would say just keep the drums at your place, since that seems like what you want to do anyway. i would be concerned, however (as previous posters mentioned) about it turning into an issue with your neighbor down the road.
good luck.

Re: Ergghhh-what do I do?
How many times did they complain? And how did you leave it with him? If it was only once, then I wouldn't even bother worrying about it. If he complains again, I'd ask him what HIS compromise would be -- scheduled hours maybe. But then again, that seems so unfair to poor Ryan -- he doesnt understand limits and compromise yet. So maybe it would just be less confusing to him to keep them at your moms.
Sorry you guys have to bother with this.
