Estimated cost of repairs $$$
I know this may be hard to do without exact dimensions, but we are currently house-hunting and it would be helpful to have a ballpark figure in my head on how much things are to repair. (We've been looking at 3 BR homes approx 2000 SqFt ):
Refinish hardwood floors Install hardwood floors Finish a basement New Kitchen New bath (full and 1/2) New windows New siding New roof Sheetrocking
Anything else you can think of, please feel free to add to the list!
Thanks!

Re: Estimated cost of repairs $$$
Well.. We did the work ourselves so I am not totally sure, I am going to give you ball park figures here:
Refinish hardwood floors: did it ourselves cost about $300-$400
Install hardwood floors: instead of refinishing? that can get really expensive - I'd say $2,00-3,000
New Kitchen: $20,000 and up depending on the materials and size of the kitchen
New bath (full and 1/2): again depends on materials and size of bathroom.. I'd say 8-12K for full bath and 3-4K for half.
New windows: depends on size and how many windows. Usually for standard sized windows about $300-$350 ea (with installation)
New siding: 10,000-15,000
New roof: depends - are you getting a whole new roof or just another layer if there is only one now? $5,000-$15,000
Sheetrocking: sheetrocking what? do you want to tear all the walls down and start over? If thats what you are doiing thats a lot. I'd say about 10-20K....
Like I said, these are really very ballpark. But if you want to do all these things and hire people to do them, you are easliy look at $100,000+ in remodeling costs - you're basically looking to rebuild the whole house!

Re: Estimated cost of repairs $$$
By refinish hardwood floors, do you mean sand, stain, and poly -- or just sand and poly the natural wood? It's somewhere in the $3-4 per sf for with stain, $2-3 without, I think.
For new bathrooms, figure $6,500 - 10,000 (depending on how expensive your tile, fixtures, etc. are) for a full bath *if* you don't plan to move any of the plumbing. If you plan to move plumbing, it will likely be a lot more. Half bath will depend on the size, but I'd think you could do that for more like $2,500 depending on the quality of materials and fixutres you buy and whether you want to move plumbing.
Sheetrock - not sure. We're getting our estimate tomorrow night, so I'll let you know. Someone told me they had 2 bedrooms done for $900 once -- but no idea on the sf, whether they had to demo the walls, too, etc. If you need studs replaced or something, it can be even more expensive. It's less expensive if you can hang it youself and only use the pros to mud and tape. Hanging it is easy most of the time, but you can run into problems getting it even and flat sometimes...
What do you want in a new kitchen? Are you ripping it out completely, replacing all appliances and cabinets? Laminate countertop? Granite countertop? Wooden cabinets or a cheaper version? New floor? We just replaced all appliances in our kitchen for a little over $3,000, including delivery, installation, and hauling away old appliances. (We got a standard fridge with ice maker, standard dishwasher, higher end stove, and a basic over-the-range microwave all in SS and all Maytag brand) We're putting in a new granite countertop with tile backsplash but don't have estimates yet. We're looking at anywhere from $60-100 per sf for the granite (installed) and I'm not sure yet on the tile. My parents were looking at the nicer laminate colors and were quoted about $37 per sf without installation. No idea on cabinets - we just plan to sand and re-stain ours. Our kitchen floor is tile in good shape, so we're leaving that for now, too.
For windows, I'd figure about $300-$500 per window installed.

Re: Estimated cost of repairs $$$
Thanks...I would never purchase a house that needed ALL of these things done, but as I'm looking some need kitchens, some need new floors, etc.
I figured kitchens would be the big ticket item because I would like SS appliances, granite, etc.
My DH and I are not very handy, but considering how expensive it costs to hire people, we may need to start learning

I'm actually happy our house needed the kitchen redone b/c now I can do it the way I REALLY want it. It would be difficult to justify the expense if it were all brand new and I just didn't like it.

Finish floors - if whole house, figure 2500-4000
New Bath - materials alone could be anywhere from 2000 and up (ours materials for our small bath cost 3,000+ but I used Pottery Barn accessories, and a special order cabinet) If a professional does it, figure 9,000 - 15,000
Finish a basement - 10,000 for basic finished basement up to 20,000. For luxury basements, way more than 20,000. Alure's Owens Corning basement systems, for ex, cost 30,000ish.
Half Bath materials alone - probably 1500-2500 depending on materials, choice, etc Professional 7000-10,000
New windows- installed by a company, for a whole house, low end 7000- middle 10,000 high end 20000+ (For ex, I have a friend who wanted to replace all windows with Pella, he was quoted by Pella 30,000+)
Siding, again by a company, siding whole house w/ all windows, average amt, and maybe a garage - 10,000-20,000 New Roof - 6,000-8,000 apx
Each item totally depends on what items, what quality, who is installing, etc. So it is hard to say exactly but these are rough estimates that I have seen from experience, friends, family, etc.
Again, there are wide variations to take into consideration.
