Ethics question - Pet organ transplant
Not for my cat *knock wood*, I'm just interested in opinions since DH and I debate this all the time.
A 'semi-famous' celebrity has a cat that needed kidney transplant. It was 12K for the operation and part of the deal was that she needed to adopt a cat from a shelter and use that cat as the kidney donor.
Ethical, or not? Donor cat obviously didn't agree to be kidney donor, but kitty might have not been adopted and would have been put to sleep.
ETA: Donor kitty is doing well and now living at home with celebrity and recipient kitty.
Thoughts? Is it ethical to take the organ from the animal if you are giving it (a better) life?

Torn YES , But the donor kitty is home and not in a shelter any more. So more ok with it then not.

Hmm that's a tough question. I mean, I guess since the donor kitty is still doing well and living in a loving home instead of a shelter then I guess it's a win/win situation.
I wonder how old the recipient kitty was. That would change my answer. I would not go through with this to prolong my cat's life for a year or two- not when there are so many cats out there who need homes.

I know which celebrity you are talking about..
I know its horrible to just bring in another innocent animal to save my pet's life.. but I don't know what I would do.. but the fact that this person adopted the donor kitty and both cats are thriving and happy makes me feel much better and kind of sways me to think it is ok.

i would do it!!
most people gave her shiiittt about spending $12k on the surgery
ive seen pics of both animals on her twitter page. they both look so cute
she loves cats and treats all of them amazing

It is a unique situation but I do not think it is unethical. Many shelter animals are euthanized each day due to lack of housing/resources. While this is not a situation that is often encounterd I can't see why it would be considered unethical since the donor kitty was adopted and is being well cared for.
