Ever get tongue tied with superiors?
Like managers and directors? One in particular just came to talk to me and I totally got flustered. He's asking me questions and I can only muster simple answers. He just looked at me kinda expecting me to say more and I just couldnt. I looked like a complete azz! I dont even want to know what he thinks of me

WHen I was younger I used to get that way, now my office mate is surprised with what I get away with saying.  But I have been here forever and developed a good raport with all the owners and managers.

I do when I first come into contact with them ... like the first few weeks at a job or after first meeting them ... but I am pretty ba!!$y when it comes to speaking my mind and telling them what I THINK. In my experience you don't get anywhere by being meek and mousy (I've been down that road) ... most employers want people who believe in their convictions and have thoughts.
It works in my situation ... they come to me for ideas and solutions and big projects ... they walk all over and bully a lot of my coworkers on a daily basis.

No, not really.
Only if they ask personal questions that I don't feel comfortable answering.
Or, if I'm totally caught off guard with something completely unexpected. Like the other day my boss said to me:
"Yeah so when I get kicked out of my office, I'll be taking yours because it's the nicest one next to mine." 
Turns out he was kidding (I think  ) but I was at a complete and utter loss for words and started saying stupid things like "Oh no, you wouldn't want my office, it sucks because ...blah blah blah..."

all the freaking time and i just did about five minutes ago...there are things that my boss can get done that i cannot. there are things people will say yes to him for but not to me...
i asked for an SUV from our TA and he gave us a mini-van... i questioned it and he (avoided it) but then basically told me that he couldn't do an SUV
my boss calls and he says yes to the SUV- now, i know it's b/c of who my boss is vs. me but c'mon!!
it makes me look like a liar AND it insults me b/c why is he saying yes to things for my boss but not me?
it's like when my FMIL goes into a store- people run to help her, will do any return, give her coupons-- me: no, no, no we can't do that.

This is my exact situation. I usually feel comfortable talking to anyone, but he's new here and basically assessing my department and its budget.

Yes, that is why I try to limit face-to-face contact and go for email. That way I can read, re-read, and triple read before I send it off.

Yes It took me a while, but hwat I learned was short simple answers were OK as long as I sounded confident in my answer!
Last time I needed to confront my boss, I knew short & simple wasn't going to work, so I wrote a letter to him!!
