Excessive Barking
I have an 18 month old puggle who has suddenly found his voice. Since DH and I have gone back to work in September our dog has barked excessively and I don't know why or what he wants. I can't do anything without him standing in front of me barking. How can we get him to stop? Could it be lack of attention/separation anxiety since he's home all day by himself?

Re: Excessive Barking
well, it depends on when he does it -- if he does it when he first sees you -- like when you enter a room or when you first get home and if he does it while he is "greeting" you or looking for your attention don't give him any attention until he stops. you can do this by turning around when he jumps up to say hello to you and barks... then, when he quiets down immediately turn back and give him attention/affection and praise. you can do the same idea by saying NO in a loud, stern voice with your finger right in his face -- then, the second he stops, praise.
we found, also, that the "correction" can of coins was the best thing for that -- we have a schnauzer and they are known for barking -- so, we discouraged it from day one. we use a coffee can filled half way with coins and shake it violently at her whenever she did something we didn't want her to do - especially barking. worked great. this combined with the other techniques -- and being consistent -- helped tremendously.

I agree with Dani that it depends on when he does it. I've known a few people with puggles who have separation anxiety so that could be playing a role in it. They also need a lot of exercise when they are young. How often is your dog walked? This might help. Good luck!

Re: Excessive Barking
I agree with both PP.. Do not give the dog attention during his barking.. But you must correct him immediately and consistantly.. Calmly!!! You cant scream SHUT UP with a loud voice it just adds to the anxiety.. Do the can rattle.. It works wonders.. But be calm.. If your uptight and anxious so will the dog be.. And long walks.. This should do it.. I nipped that in the bud from day one.. My dh and I refuse to have a barking yapping dog.. She is perfect.. She only barks when I am playing with her (sometimes) or is her ball, toy, treat is under something she cant get at.. Or if she wants to get on the bed.. She cant jump that high.. And its 3 barks at the most then she waits and waits till I come!!.. I sware I learned this from the dog whisperer!! I tape every single episode! Good luck!!
ETA:: BTW your dog is GORGEOUS I love his body!! Its so fit!!
