Exec: Newsday rethinking free Web site
http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-webcabl2712498959feb26,0,19406.story
Newsday appears poised to break from the newspaper pack with a plan by parent Cablevision Systems Corp. to end free content on the paper's Web site.
While specifics of the plan remain unclear, Cablevision chief operating officer Tom Rutledge - on a conference call Thursday - drew a link between declining newspaper fortunes in general and plans for Newsday in particular.
"When we purchased Newsday, we were aware of the long-term issues facing the traditional newspaper industry," Rutledge told analysts Thursday. "We plan to end the distribution of free Web content and make our newsgathering capabilities a service to our customers."
Cablevision and Newsday executives and editors declined to discuss the plan, but in a statement released last night, Newsday publisher Timothy P. Knight said: "We are in the process of transforming Newsday's Web site into an enhanced, locally focused cable service that we believe will become an important benefit for Newsday and Cablevision customers. More particulars will be forthcoming over the next few months."
I like going to the Newsday site for info, but there's no way I'm going to pay for it. It's not THAT good.... I can find the info from any number of other sites. I've learned how to live without News12 for the last 10 years. I can live without Newsday as well....

Re: Exec: Newsday rethinking free Web site
What a silly move - with people using the internet to get their news and newspaper sales being down, do you really think people will pay to look at Newsday's website? There are so many other sites you can get your local NY/LI news from!!!
It is usually greedy moves like this that end up costing the company tons of money which causes them to go out of business...

I go on newsday.com about 100 times a day. I love reading online for free! and the stories are more updated, because its not in print. And the message boards is another great feature, when they allow them on stories though.

What they're thinking is that people will start buying the paper. Unfortunately for them, it's not going to happen. People will just get their news from other websites. The age of the printed press is over.

The message boards are powered by topix.net, Newsday can't change to access that site.
Here is the direct link to Newsday related topic http://www.topix.net/forum/source/newsday
No way Newsday gets more than 100 people to pay for that site.
The WSJ is original news of value that is why they can charge.
Newsday is AP feeds and local crapola, no value in paying for that.

Several printed papers are doing fine these days.
Newsday's glory days are 20 years behind them, same is true for most local papers

Exactly. I might pay for the NYT or WSJ online, but not for Newday.

Re: Exec: Newsday rethinking free Web site
i would never pay for it, but I can't wait to tell my FIL, because we JUST had this coversation the other day, he was thinking of canceling his actual paper, because he said he can go online for free my MIL said he's not allowed to, so he' not going to
I think its a really bad move. One less site i will look at now. I would never pay for it, there are a million other sites with the info

Which one(s)? It would be quite hard to find one paper that has a higher circulation now than say 10/20 years ago?

IMO Newsdays website stinks. It lags greatly and is not a current report of the news. I would never pay for it.

Wall Street Jornal and Washington Post are the first two that spring to mind.
Both have increased their individual paid subscriptions numbers which is the only number that matters.

Re: Exec: Newsday rethinking free Web site
The article says if you are a cablevision customer, it would be free.
Cablevision purchased Newsday last year. This is a tactic they are using to secure the cable market.

Did you not see me mention individual paid which is the number that really matters on ABC statement?
FT (Financial Times) is also up
And the magazines/weeklies Barrons and Economist are way up

Re: Exec: Newsday rethinking free Web site
I wish there was a way for it to be free and have the reporters make the money they deserve. I am not sure if the issue of paying reporters is the reason that they want to become a paid service but I know that there have been cutbacks which have forced reporters to find other jobs. Think about it, how do journalists make their money nowadays? We need them, but there has to be a way for them to support themselves.
