Hum . . . that's interesting. Do people in California pay local income taxes or is there a higher sales tax?

Re: Explain to me why you have to pay so much $$$ for property tax
Proposition 13, officially titled the "People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxation," was a ballot initiative to amend the constitution of the state of California. The initiative was enacted by the voters of California on June 6, 1978. It was upheld as constitutional by the United States Supreme Court in the case of Nordlinger v. Hahn, 505 U.S. 1 (1992). Proposition 13 is embodied in Article 13A of the California Constitution.
The most significant portion of the act is the first paragraph, which capped real estate taxes:
“ SECTION 1. (a) The maximum amount of any ad valorem tax on real property shall not exceed One percent (1%) of the full cash value of such property. The one percent (1%) tax to be collected by the counties and apportioned according to law to the districts within the counties.

for us here on LI its school taxes. 63% of our property taxes goes to the school districts and the majority of that goes for administrators, pensions and benefits. unless and until that changes our taxes will always be ridiculously high.

Re: Explain to me why you have to pay so much $$$ for property tax
I got something in the mail the other day saying Nassau County pays the THIRD highests property taxes in the nation...1/3 of all homeowners in Nassau County believe their properties are wrongly assessed
Apparently the democrats have also proposed to change the law so the Nassau County tax assessor is appointed instead of elected which I am against...I think we should have the ability to vote for the County Tax Assessor so we have some say in our property taxes.

i think because in other states the schools are totally funded by the state as opposed to us tax payers in NY. and to think we get every season and pay the most!

Mine in San Diego were 1.1% not that I'm complaining, but...
If I really compare the two...they are about the same. My CA were about 1/3 of my NY taxes...but in CA I lived in a 1 BD townhouse (so add in HOA, which partially goes to taxes on HOA land/buildings and garbage and sewage, which is included in my NY tax bill). In NY I have a 3BR home on 1/2 acre (and my garbabge is a tax write off)
Plus HUGE difference in SD schools and LI schools.
