Explaining your child's name.....
Why is it that when I say her name is LEAH people respond with "oh, like the Princess from Star Wars?"
Uh, no duhh - that was Princess "Leia" (lay-ah) not LEAH (lee-ah)
Why do I always have to EXPLAIN to people what her name is and how to say it?

You know what, Janice, me too!!!!! This is how the conversation usually goes:
Person, usually old: What's his name? Me: Steven Old person: with a 'ph' or 'v'? Me: V Old person: Oh the Jewish way.
I never even thought about that, first of all. Second of all, how do you know my DH or I are not Jewish?

I always get the opposite, I could have gone Spanish or Irish, so I picked Jewish
My one aunt actually said, I am surprised you did not go with a biblical name I said WHAT????
She said, well he wasn't an apostle...

Re: Explaining your child's name.....
I swear this actually happened to me. I was in my local ASDA supermarket when Noah was an infant and an old lady asked me what his name was, when I replied Noah she said...thats an original name, did you make it up? I said...no, its from a book. (the bible you silly old bat) Noah is quite an unusual name here in the UK (although now there is another one in Noah's class at nursery)

And yes, I do have to explain Logan's name all the time.
They think his name is Moby for crying out loud.
Of course, my explaination is that I liked the name from Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars, and my husband liked it from Wolverine. So it's not much better.

Re: Explaining your child's name.....
I get this with DS's name, but it's unusual, so I expect it. His name is Asher, people always think I'm saying Ashton. They always look perplexed and I explain that it's a very old biblical name, one of Jacob's sons, one of the tribes of Isreal. Funny thing though, I have met a few (very few) people named Asher since he was born.

Re: Explaining your child's name.....
Sorry Corinne--I always thought ca-RIN too!
DD's name is Katherine--so no explanations there (although several people assumed she was named after a grandmother--is it that old of a name??), but her middle name is Emer. OMG, you should have seen the puzzled expressions--and that's putting it lightly So yeah, when she was first born, we explained a lot.

I get asked all the time why we call him Christopher. And when I say he is a III, I get SO many opinions abotu how people would never do that, nad how a child needs their own name (gee thanks )
People are dumb.
