Re: External harddrives
I'm no computer genius, but a hard drive is a hard drive.
I like to use www.pricewatch.com for computer parts - they do a good job of finding the cheapest stuff.
I've also purchased from www.macmall.com (also known as www.pcmall.com). call them- they often run specials that they don't advertise on the site.

Re: External harddrives
We have a Maxtor One Touch II 200gb, I keep all pictures and music in it.
I forget what it costs but I got it at Staples. Pretty simple to set up, I haven't read the manual to see if there is anything else I should know though ....

Re: External harddrives
I would think any external hard drive (250GB for $160) that connects through your USB port would be fine. I have one for all of my pictures, documents & my iPod backed up on it.

Re: External harddrives
This looks good to me - I recently built a computer for a class, and used this site to purchase some parts.

never go to Worst Buy for your tech needs... (they jack up prices)
external hard drives are all simlar...if you are using it daily, firewire drives are much faster then USB2.0 drives.
just be warned, hard drives (external) can fail the same way internal drives fail. i prefer media to back up pictures. my hard drive (internal) with music I don't touch until i need (that computer is off) so the chance of something happening to it is reduced.
i have to much music any way to be swaping to a different harddrive just for backup

Re: External harddrives
We use an external hard drive. But we did learn a valuable lesson a few months ago. Our computer crashed but hey, we have an external harddrive so who was worried? Well, because the external was plugged into the computer, the harddrive fried also. Every picture from our wedding, of our son, every family function - financial documents, phone numbers, addresses, my entire life is kept on this. So if you do get one, unplug it if you are not using it. It will protect you if you get a virus.

Re: External harddrives
Thanks everyone. I'm not a techie at all so I didn't know if there were ones made for specific needs.

What do you mean you use media to back up? Like CD Rom? I do that now, but I thought somebody posted an article about how digital images will only last 7 years on them. I have ALL of Sarah's pictures on disc, so I don't want to lose them.
I'm so confused now.

this makes me think, my Maxtor OneTouch II has a one button back up that I've never used - will that protect all my files?
Also, I connected it via USB but I am reading the box and it says "available Firewire port" - how do I use Firewire?
I hope I am not hijacking, I figured this was relelvant to the OP question!
