Extra calories
How many extra calories do you need in your first trimester? I've been eating as usual.. I see so many conflicting information online.. how pounds should I gain my first tri..
Sorry, so many questions.. I don't see my doc until next week for my blood test

Re: Extra calories
I don't count calories (didn't pre pregnancy either), I eat when I'm hungry. I'm not sure I could even wager a guess about how many calories I eat a day. I lost weight in the first trimester because I was sick, so my doctor really just told me to make sure I stayed hydrated and to try and eat whatever was appealing. Which most days was several bowls of cereal or bagels. Pre-pregnancy I started off pretty thin, now I'm 32 weeks and up 17lbs and my doctor is fine with that. I just eat somewhat healthy (save for the sour patch kids and gummy bears, haha) and pretty similarly to how I ate before I was pregnant.

Re: Extra calories
I think you are supposed to consume 300 calories extra per day. I dont count calories (only when dieting) and I dont necessarily eat more now...I am eating the same. I am lil more hungrier but trying to snack alot like I usually do and eat filling things.
As for weight gain, I think it depends on your bmi. Are you underweight or overweight? If you are underweight, it may be ok to gain a few pounds in the beginning but if you are overweight your dr. may say it is not ok - lol! I think the general rule is that 1st tri you shouldnt gain much...but I could be wrong. Maybe the other girls can answer better!

Re: Extra calories
the book said not that many extra calories are supposedly needed in the first tri but i was ALWAYS hungry. I didn't count calories just ate when needed which felt like all the time.
I wouldn't worry about calories, just make sure that you eat when necessary and try to balance it with healthy foods. I ate a lot of carbs in the first tri because thats what seemed to keep me full longer and didn't make me feel sick.

Re: Extra calories
You should eat 300 extra calories a day after your first trimester is over. I would just eat as normally as you can right now, though between morning sickness, bloating and a host of other things, you might not be able to. Just eat what you can, when you can, and don't worry about the weight gain!

Re: Extra calories
As per the doctor, you don't need any extra calories a day in the first trimester, and you shouldn't expect to gain any weight.
After that, you only need about 300 extra calories a day (an extra snack or two) and total weight gain over your pregnancy should be about 25lbs.

Re: Extra calories
I think the first tri was like 200 cal's a day. maybe even 100 in the very beginning.
I did receive an email saying I should be eating an extra 500 cals a day... that was when I was about 20 weeks along or so.
