Face Mask vs Face Shield UPDATED
UPDATE (sorta):
Not about the shields but I am now 100% convinced that continuous mask wearing for me causes ear inflammation. Not too long Ago I went on antibiotics and steroids for a swollen lymph node behind my right ear and my ear itself was hurting and red as per the dr. Since I last posted this, I took advice on using non scented cleaner for my masks and the daily throat pain and headaches have lessened a lot - so thank you. But I had to wear my mask a lot the last few days being close to some of our employees and my ear Has been killing me again. Swelling behind/under it again. Today is day 3 of pain but it’s a little less as of this morning (haven’t worn a mask since 2pm yesterday.) I won’t have to wear a mask again until Tuesday. I will update if the ear issue stops without meds this time from just not wearing a mask for a couple days.
——————————————————
Has anyone seen any real studies / results on the two?
I’m starting to think this daily , long term mask Wearing is really messing me up.
**** i know people have been wearing them for hours on end forever - surgeons, nurses, etc etc. no real concrete evidence masks can make people sick****
I’m talking about me, personally. I couldn’t tell you how many times I was sure I was sick, just to get a day without my mask (stayed in) and it just all stops.
Sore throat, ear pain, sinus pressure, dry nose, etc. I had a bad sore throat & headache wed and Thurs. I told DH last night that I should probably get to the dr just in case. Woke up this morning? Completely fine. Wednesday I had to run our store the whole day and wore my mask a lot of the time because I was working closely with an employee. So I’m thinking it was the excessive mask wearing that got to me.
This in no way is me saying I won’t wear it anymore blah blah blah. It’s me asking if anyone has seen any studies showing shields work just as well because I may need to try that when I have to wear something long term.

Face Mask vs Face Shield
I know you aren't interested in the blah blah blah, but the more you wear it, like anything, the more you get used to it. In the beginning at work I was constantly aware I had a mask on, now I rarely even think of it. As for your question, I read one article that a shield should be worn in conjunction with a mask. But I really don't know about the efficacy of the shield on it's own. I'd be interested too.

The blah blah blah was “all the reasons I’ll. Be told I’m wrong because there is zero evidence showing masks cause anything I’m feeling” and that’s what I’m not looking to hear. I’m not anti mask. I think they are definitely helping but in my own personal experience, when I have to wear it longer than 30 min at a time, I get these very real sick feelings.
I’ve been wearing a mask 6 days a week on and off for 15 min. -ish at a time. Unless I’m next to an employee (helping wash / dry a dog) or having long interactions with a client. Other than that, food shopping is my longest time with one as well. But it’s been since mid May. I’m not used to it. Even a little. The longer I wear it, the worse I feel. And this time it took 2 days for the sick feeling to go away bc I wore it most of the day Wednesday. It’s really terrible

Re: Face Mask vs Face Shield
I only heard recently that it is an extra layer of protection, when you wear a mask. It protects your eyes from the virus.
I thought I may wear one with a mask next time I fly- although I have no plans to now.
Additionally, I was in Stop N Shop one day and a tall worker had only the shield on- which I am sure is allowed. But since I'm short, I thought if he coughs or sneezes, it's all going to rain down on me. I quickly got away from him

I can't help with any studies, but have you tried different masks? Maybe you are sensitive to chemicals on the fabric?

The medical ones are way worse, so I can agree with that. If it has some chemicals in there - absolutely. I’ve been using mostly handmade cotton masks and wash with my regular detergent in boiling hot water. I don’t what else to do really

I had to buy free and clear detergent for my masks, I was developing a rash on my face from my regular tide.

Well that's why I wasn't going to say that to you, you aren't looking to hear it, so I'm trying to me respectful!!! All I can do is give you my experience...I have asthma, allergies, headaches all those fun things and yes in beginning wasn't great. But my mask has to be on for 8 hours at work, it only gets taken off for the hour I go to lunch. So I do think you just get used to it. I would suggest cotton fabric masks if you aren't using them already. They are easier for me to breathe in. But I am going to look into the face shields, as I said I don't know too much about them. I do like that my face could be seen! If I find any articles about them I will share!
Sorry, I just saw you are using fabric ones. But try to get 100% cotton. My mom makes mine, so I can't help with a brand.

Ty I’m going to buy some free and clear detergent and see if that helps. Even though I’ve used tide pretty much forever, I’ve never had it on my face for long periods.

That sounds pretty unlikely. If you're that sick and think it's from the masks, go to the doctor and see what they say.

Do you have allergies? Is it possible your allergies are acting up? A lot of what you described sounds like my allergy symptoms- and it comes and goes overnight sometimes.

Re: Face Mask vs Face Shield
It's probably pollen on the mask aggravating your allergies also. Did you try disposable ones? Oh, I see you said that they are fabric. Like another poster said, maybe the soap. I'm allergic to scented soap. I wash my face masks in unscented hand soap with hot water and scrub. The scrubbing and friction is what will kill the germs, not necessarily the detergent. Unless it's antiviral detergent. So many just do hot water and rub together and see if that helps

Yea. I’m going to get the Free and clear detergent that a PP mentioned and see if that works.
I don’t think it’s my allergies because I’m on Zyrtec and Rhinocort daily. With a Claritin kicker ... and on days I don’t wear the mask at all, I feel 100% fine. Or if I wear it for quick 10-15 min Intervals , I feel ok too. Any longer and it starts w the ears, nose and throat. It has to be the masks. There is nothing else I could think of. But I didn’t consider the detergent issue. Hopefully that will help.

Last month I went to the dr because that feeling in my ear never went away. Wound up with an ear infection and needed antibiotics and a low dose steroid (because I can’t take anti inflammatory) That was around the time I was wearing the mask way more and my throat was hurting along with my ears. Dr said it could have been allergy overboard. Who knows. I just know what I’m feeling and I’ve been keeping track of it in my notes on my phone because I needed to sort it out. It’s the mask

Re: Face Mask vs Face Shield
You’ve probably considered these already, but on the off chance it’s helpful, what about a bandana, buff, or gaitor? I played around with a bunch for my kids. One kid prefers surgical masks, go figure, but the other likes the gaitor that you wear around your neck and pull up over your face. When I exercise I like bandanas, because they are open on the bottom I find them more breathable.

Face Mask vs Face Shield
Shields should be worn with masks as well. The shield is protecting your eyes and they are using them in schools if they need close contact with students such as speech services or in a special education classroom.
I would try a few different types of masks. Even thought most stay they are cotton, some feel different and to me are more comfortable. There are also ones that look like a scarf that you just pull over your mouth/nose when needed. Also when trying on don't get the ones that kind of go over the chin as well. That makes me cough like crazy, I guess it's the no airflow or something. For my kids and myself, we have bought a TON of mask trying to find ones that work well. So far my daughter likes the ones from Target and Abercrombie best and I like Vera Bradley ones.

I have a cotton one that's made of like a light ribbed, almost waffle knit type fabric and I find that one so much more comfortable and breathable than my other cotton ones

I’ll look into the Vera Bradley & target one
Nell, where did you get yours?
Thanks so much for everyone’s suggestions and replies. Already have dye free detergent coming and I’ll def look into getting some new masks.
I liked the material of the one from techusa but I don’t like that it literally goes into my mouth as I talk. Completely grossed me out. But the material was a lighter. I didn’t wear it long enough to see if it would bother me.
I have Bluffs. For the winter. Those are too thin. I was able to blow out a flame without any issue at all.
The great mask hunt continues!

Live Love GameDay. It's an online clothing store based in Texas. However they don't seem to have that one anymore, I got it back in April or May. They have others but they aren't that ribbed fabric it seems. I guess they changed up their stock for summer or something

Face Mask vs Face Shield
I read that 2 hair stylists were positive for Covid_19 and had symptoms. They worked on over 100 clients and not one test positive. They were wearing masks and face shields. I think it’s worthwhile if you have a job where you are in someone’s personal space. I don’t think shields are necessary for daily use like going to the store...
