Facebook Q
I'm a teacher and have a few friends from school on FB.
This morning I check it and I have a friend request. I open it and it's from a student that graduated (el. ed, not HS) last year or 2 years ago. So she is about 13.
I never had this girl as a student, but I knew her. Her mom's on the PTA, her sister was next door to my classroom. She's a FANTASTIC kid, love her, admire so many unique qualities about her...basically, if she was my age, we'd totally be friends.
Now, I don't know how she found me on FB since I go by my married name and teach with my maiden name. No matter, but do would you handle this request?
I *want* to say yes b/c she truly is a great kid.
But at the same time, I want to keep it for my grown up friends.
I want to approach her mom but I don't want her to get in trouble if her mom doesn't know she has an account.
I also don't want OTHER students, past or present, to 'friend' me. I also don't want any parents to do that either.
I'm not 'afraid' of what she'll see. I'm not posting provacotive pictures or cursing or sending sexual innuendo types of links, you know? I'm very vanilla! I do have a teacher email that I set up for my kids.
But I don't know how to do this tactfully. The right thing to do is say no, but how??? I don't want to crush her (as if her whole life depends on me friending her! ).

Re: Facebook Q
My DH is a teacher also and I was just thinking of this scenario last night...
He said he would just ignore the request and possibly block the user...Not to be mean or anything. It's just one of those things where you need to realize that "nothing good can come of this"....

Re: Facebook Q
I would definitely ignore it
This is why they told my SIL (which is a teacher) not to start a faceboook account...

Re: Facebook Q
I am a teacher and have a strict policy to only accept friend requests from students who have graduated high school. Otherwise it is just too much responsibility.
That being said I love to hear what they are up to, but only when they are no longer in the district.

Re: Facebook Q
She is probably like most kids out there that don't want to be your 'friend' they just want 9999+ friends on their list.
I would email her through your school email program telling her that you do not accept any friend requests from students. I would never just ignore her. That is rude.

Re: Facebook Q
DH is a teacher, but has no FB account, but I do. We recently ran an overseas trip with many of his students so they know me. If any of them send a request, I would just ignore it.

Re: Facebook Q
I wouldn't accept. Accepting her is opening the flood gates that all of her friends can now see you have a FB, and they will request you.
