fair price per hour for babysitter?
i am transiting into hiring a sitter rather than using my mother.
what is a fair cost for a three-year old for 8 hours a day? the child sleeps for two hours a day and twice a week, goes to pre-k for three hours.
10? 12?
i have never paid anyone before and am looking to get some advice. thanks so much in advance.
ETA - would you or do you change the price you pay your sitter on the days your DC is in school?

For an adult, I would think 15+. I pay a 19-20 year old $10 an hour.

$15 an hour would cost you $120 a day. You'd be paying $600 a week.
I pay my sitter $10/hour and she charges $50 a day if it's an 8 hr day time shift. But I drop her off at her house. You might be better off going with traditional day care center at those rates

Thats 34 hours a week of 1 on 1 childcare in your home. I'd offer$300 a week.

Somewhere between $400-$500 per week, assuming she has off those 3 hours of pre-k.
The napping 2 hours a day is irrelevant because it's not 2 hours your sitter has off. If you expect her doing chores for you during those hours of pre-k, then $500 would be my minimum.

$15 per hour. I think spending money on a quality sitter is worth every cent! I paid $20 for my twin daughters when we had our sitter for 3 years- no regrets!

Soo agree with this. I get paid $15-20 per hour when I babysit. Im a 42 yr old Mom of 3 & the kids get my fulm attn & I keep house tidy. Oh I cook too.

We pay $500 per week for an identical schedule- nursery 2 times per week and daily naps. Dinner is prepared during those naps, house is tidied ect.

I paid my college age sitter $10 an hour for my one child. I paid an adult (career nanny) $17 an hour, but she cleaned for the 3 hours DD napped.

I think it all depends... If I am going out once in a while we easily pay the sitter $50 even though we are only gone 3 hours. BUT a full time sitter at $15 an hour is very expensive. I pay my sitter $10 an hour for full time. I drop DD off at her house and she is completely amazing, takes great care of her, I get pictures nonstop and they're constantly doing some craft or project. I usually use her around 30 hours a week, so we are spending $1200 a month on child care. We also established a minimum though. I pay her $200 even if she only watches DD 8 hours that week, because she also relies on that income to support her family.

I agree with this. A babysitter for a night out needs to make $15/hr to make it worth their time.
As a career caregiver, I agree with setting a salary for the week.
I also dont think bc you pay someone more than someone else they are necessarily a better or worse caretaker. You can be paying someone $20 an hr that isnt as good as another person who is paid $10. JMO

I have a similar situation! I wish my sitter was a little more hi-tech. I dont get pics ever. she can barely text.

I agree with this a lot. As someone who babysits and is looking for a new family.I charge a low rate because I do this because I like doing it. Yes I need to make a certain amount to make it work for me, but that amount is a lot less than what others would charge. But I find a lot of people think because I charge less, I must be lesser quality. I charge less because I enjoy doing it and know what I need to break even.
