We also have two up, and two down.
The two down, one is a guest BR, one is the computer/playroom.
We have a rear dormer, so the bedrooms sizes are decent. DH and I just moved into the smaller BR, and DS and his new sibling will be sharing a room.

We are downstairs with my 7 month old and my 3 year old son is upstairs by himself. We really didn't have a choice. I have a video monitor upstairs so I can see him and hear him at night.

My friend has 2 bedrooms up and 2 down. When it was 1 kid he was down with them. Now that they have 2 they are both upstairs. She used monitors and never had a problem.

Re: families that live in a cape with 2 or more children
we only have 1 bedroom downstairs now bc we turned that into a bigger kitchen, so as a result dd is upstairs and so will dc#2 and we are downstairs...i think either way though i would put dd upstairs even if we had that extra room downstairs, that way i wouldnt have to worry about making too much noise while she slept

I have 2 bedrooms downstairs and a master suite upstairs. So the girls are downstairs and I am upstairs. I have an alarm...and I have contacts on both of their windows, since they are on the first floor.

Re: families that live in a cape with 2 or more children
We have the same, 2 up, 2 down. DS is downstairs across from us. Initially I was going to move ho to a new big boy room upstairs, but I didn't want to upset his life more than necessary or make him feel like DD was taking his room and replacing him and he was being moved away from us. So the nursery is going upstairs with the playroom. Yes, it will be a little more inconvenient for me, but it his adjustment to a new baby going as smooth as possible was my priority. Eventually they will probably both be upstairs and the playroom will be downstairs.

Re: families that live in a cape with 2 or more children
we have 2 up and 1 down. kids are upstairs and we are down. it's ok. but it's PITA especially in the very beginning! i do like the separation after they have gone to bed and i don't have to tiptoe around...but doing feedings and check-ins in the early weeks was tough! i found the worst thing was how awake i would be when i got downstairs. the up and down thing just woke me up all the more and i would need another hour to fall asleep. it was much easier when DD was simply across the hall. sometimes i would be up and down those stairs doing binky runs 5x a night!
