for a treat for a 4 yr old...which one would you take her to?

Tough call...both are great! I haven't actually brought my children to either (though, I may steal your idea and take them in the spring ). I think FAO Schwartz is bigger and has more in terms of unique toys that you wouldn't see elsewhere. I think one of the only "wow" factors of TRU is the ferris wheel (which is still pretty darn cool)!

Maybe it's because I live here, but I think TRU in Times Square is a nightmare....you couldn't pay me to take DS there. It's just a mob scene all day long. FAO, while still crowded, is just a much less chaotic scene.

ETA: If she's into American Girl dolls, you can try the American Girl store on 5th....crowded still but again, less chaotic.

FAO - Toys R Us is in the middle of Times Square and although I've never been brave (or patient) enough to get in there, it just LOOKS like insanity -

I would say FAO, but I heard a rumor it closed so you might want to check into it before you go.

We went to both at Christmas time. TRU has the indoor ferris wheel which was a big hit as well as the animatronic dinosaur from Jurassic Park (it's huge and the head moves around). Times Sq in general has a lot to do (M&M store, Hershey store and I think Madame Toussaud's is right there also (they had a SpongeBob exhibit - not sure if it's still there). FAO was nice but didn't seem as exciting for kids. They have the big piano and a craft studio where the kids can make something (pottery I think). They also have a nice book section and I'm pretty sure they do story times there.

They're both nice but very different.

ITA... although I do love TRU I think FAO is easier to walk around in and see things. There are more interactive things for DC to do. Plus, you can get some ice-cream there

i went during the christmas holidays - TRU was a nightmare and a half.

fao was a JOY and pleasure - we had a BALL!!! they have a muppets puppet maker thing - and you can play with all the toys & the staff are all so wonderful! i can't say enough about it!
