Fast growing tree?
Our backyard is completely open. It's almost 1/4 acre with NO trees. The neighbor behind us cut down his huge tree last summer b/c part was dead/threat in a storm--but now our backyard is like a desert.
We want to plant a tree that will be quick growing. My dad mentioned a swamp birch (or maybe maple?)
Any ideas?
Thank you!

Re: Fast growing tree?
An Elm. We planted a 14' tree after my daughter was born (Sept '08) and it has grown at least 10 feet since.

Re: Fast growing tree?
I like that website. Just make sure you stick to their same variety. Not just an "oak" tree for example.

Re: Fast growing tree?
No I never did. I heard someone did on this site and was happy. Can't remember who it is.
But I have no 1st hand experience and their trees are small. I like the variety they listed though.

Re: Fast growing tree?
Wow, that's a pretty cool site! I haven't ordered from them, but it's a great layout where you can see everything at a glance. I like certain tree forms (rounded) and not others (pointy) so that's good for me too.
Two things to consider - once you click on a tree, check the zone on the right. We're in 7. I looked up Aspen because I thought, why don't we see those more around here they're so pretty? And I found they only thrive to zone 6.
Also, certain trees are known for certain problems so do a google search on your final choices. I have a Youngii weeping birch and it's pretty much a given that it will contract two pests every year that feast on the leaves. Some trees are water hogs and shouldn't be planted near cesspools/pipes. Some trees are prone to diseases or limit your ability to grow grass or plants underneath them (maple).

Re: Fast growing tree?
I ordered the Willow Hybrid trees from that site last year. I was very happy with them, they shipped around 3ft tall and now are about to 12ft tall, but still need to fill in a bit more.

We have a ton of these in my neighborhood. They are beautiful but the seeds they drop smell awful. Seriously, awful.

Holy cow, really?? See, that's why I love this website and all the people here who share. I'd have never known this until it was too late. Thanks!

No problem. It really is something else. In the fall, when the seeds start falling, they not only stink but it gets worse as people step on them and it gets stuck on your shoes
Here's a funny article about them from The NYer: link

OMG totally true. We have 2 of these in front of our school & going out for fire drills in the fall is brutal. Like the smell is ridiculous & then all the kids drag the smell back into the school.
Thanks too for the zones & to check out the diseases, etc.

i think it was GoldenRod that used them previously. I haven't ordered from there yet but am eager to.

"The seeds look like green cherries and contain butyric acid, the smell of which has been variously described as “rancid butter,” “sour milk,” “sh*tberries,” and “dog crap.” "
Sh*tberries. Love it.
