feeding issues again HELP ME

yes another post about schedules.

let me preface this by saying that hannah has now been classified from our ped as a "manipulative, fussy, picky, difficult eater." we are in the process of getting her an evaluation for feeding therapy so that we can nip this in the bud. i think its kind of ironic considering that part of my job is getting kids with autism to eat non preferred foods LOL! but when its your own child its too much of an emotional investment.

that being said, has anyone used this type of feeding schedule:

wake up: cereal, fruit and small bottle (if she takes)

lunch: cereal and vegetable

snack: bottle

dinner: cereal and vegetable or fruit

bedtime: bottle

*sigh* hannah just is so not into her bottle. and now she is giivng us a hard time with solids. i thought if i put enough space in between each meal it might help.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

How old is Hannah again? Sofia is almost a yr old and this is how her feeding schedule is:

6AM- Bottle (approx 6-8 oz) and 2 small waffles or an egg
10AM- Yobaby Yogurt & 3-4oz bottle
Anywhere between 12:30-1:30 she gets 1 stage 2 fruit and 1 stage 2 veggie and another 3-4 oz formula
anywhere bet 3:30-4:30- 6 oz bottle
5:30- 8-9 Tbl cereal w/ 1 stage 2 fruit (approx 1-2 oz formula to make cereal).

The only thing that varies is her formula intake- on a great day it can go up to 28-30oz and on a bad day she will only take about 20oz.

Is it possible that Hannah is getting too much solds too soon? My Ped had advised us anytime before 10 mos they really should be getting lots of formula vs the solids.

Is she not gaining weight fast enough so this is an concern about nutrition, or just a behavioral issue?

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

Is she teething? That sounds very similar to Ava. We're lucky if she takes 16oz. a day of formula now.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

We're pretty close to that schedule except I do a bottle when she wakes and then breakfast an hour later

hannah is 7 months old, but her adjusted age is really 6 months. but she is still very small. she is only 13 lbs, 15 oz. she is in the 5th percentile for weight and height, but in the 25th for her head size LOL!

she is teething. she does bite down on the bottle alot. but she cries bloody murder when i offer the bottle for like 5 minutes and then she drinks it.

we are not sure if its behavioral at this point or if there is another reason behind it. she still has such bad reflux. she had been vomiting almost every morning for the last few weeks after her morning bottle, which is why i wanted to try cereal first thing instead.

etd to add that we are still on stage 1 fruits and veggies and we are taking it very slow with adding new foods.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

that was VERY similar to our schedule but DD likes her bottle.

Breakfast was cereal & fruit
bottle about 1 hr later
nap
lunch cereal & veggie & maybe some fruit
bottle about an hr later
nap
dinner cereal & veggie & fruit
bottle 1 - 1 1/2 hr later then bedtime.

then she lost interest in cereal after being on the meats & meat combos for awhile.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

also wanted to ask....have you gone up a nipple size??? Alyson got gassy again before we switched to stage 2 around 5 months....she'd suck so hard and swallow air and fall asleep during her bottle because it was taking too long.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

DD is 7 months and doesn't eat much but has been getting better. She still isn't too thrilled with bottles but enjoys food. her schedule looks like this.

6:30-7am 3-4oz bottle
9:30-10am 3-5oz bottle, 2tbsp cereal, 1-2 tbsp fruit
12:30-1pm 3-5oz formula, 1tbsp meat,1-2tbsp veg
3:30-4pm 3-5oz formula, 2tbsp cereal, 1-2tbsp veg
6:30-7pm 4-5oz bottle
She rarely drinks a 5oz bottle.

Good luck with Hannah. Good idea to deal with it sooner than later.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

I forgot to answer the question as to Ava's feeding schedule:

6-7am a 5oz. bottle. She usually only drinks three or four, so the rest goes in her cereal.

8:30ish- 4 tbsp. cereal and a fruit.

10:30-ish another 5oz. bottle that she never finishes.

12:30ish-either another 4tbps. cereal, or some chicken. Then either a veggie or a fruit.

2:30ish-3oz. bottle, if I'm lucky.

5:30-heaping bowl of chicken, veggies and a fruit.

7-ish 5oz. bottle, but she usually only drinks 4oz.

Today, she drank all of 12oz. She's just so uninterested in her bottle. The ped. said don't worry because even though she doesn't like her bottle, she eats like a horse! She ate a HEAPING portion of chicken tonight. I mean, an overflowing bowl of it. PLUS, an entire small sized baked potato and apples!Chat Icon If Hannah likes solids and eats them, definitely keep feeding them to her. As long as she's growing, she'll be ok. And I agree with giving her cereal first before bottles due to her reflux.

hannah is on a dr. browns level 3 nipple. the level 2 was making her fall asleep from the effort of s u c king. she does pretty good with the level 3 when she does drink from the bottle.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

honestly...it could also be a phase.

Alyson went through a good month or 2 where she'd take 2-3 oz and up to 5 oz of an 8 oz bottle!!!

I was so panic-stricken but the ped said it was fine...she was getting what she needed from solids and that she'd go back to her old self. If she was thirsty she'd drink.

Fast forward to when we started the gradual intro of whole milk into her soy formula, and down the 8 oz went!!!

This is our schedule almost exactly. The only difference is that we give the last bottle with the dinner, and then give nothing at bedtime; and we give meat and veggie for dinner. We put 6oz in every bottle and use some of that to mix the cereal. She doesn't always finish all of the bottle though. We feed her about every 4 hours. If we fed her more often, she would never finish the bottle -- she just wouldn't be hungry enough. The ped said it was very important that she continues to take in the 24oz of formula. After mixing the cereal, she is left with about 4oz of formula to drink.

Also wanted to add that some of the moms of AR kids said they have to put cereal in their kids bottle to thicken it up enough for them to keep it down. I don't know if you're opposed to this or if you've tried it. But two of them swore by it.

This is so funny to me b/c I feel like I could've written it myself. I'm glad Ellie is not the only one doing it. I thought she was. She's completely uninterested in bottles. She even went to sleep twice w/o her bedtime bottle entirely and i really freaked. But she eats solids like a horse so I guess we're ok. And she still has BMs several times a day (poops, not breastmilk lol) so she's getting enough fluids I suppose.

Are they concerned about her weight?
Miranda was a pretty particular eater and we did have to separate her bottles from her solids, we put the emphasis on bottles not solids.
How old is she now? Is her reflux still bad? She could still be associating eating with pain.
Honestly Miranda is still small and somewhat picky. She has days that she eats great and days that she eats like a bird. She eat NO vegetables at all and never really did. My ped. was never overly concerned and I try not to make an issue around food. I do sometimes still worry she's not eating enough but I figure she's not going to starve if we just keep offering her stuff.
He said to put her on a vitamin to make up for what she's missing in her diet and to just keep offering her a lot of different things. He too does not want us to make eating any kind of fight.

Re: feeding issues again HELP ME

I happen to think calling your 7 month old ANYTHING negative is insane and I would walk out on that ped. I am sorry but why is a 7 month old manuplative and a problem? Is she NOT eating at all?
Maybe you need a different nipple on the bottle or different food in the bottle?

My 3 year old is a picky eater but healthy..and if a doctor ever said those words to me I would have told him off.

There are many moms who do not even start solids until 6-8 months old. Maybe your little one is just not ready for some of this stuff? That isn't wrong at all. At 7 months old Molly was having cereal and maybe a fruit or veggie once a day.
