Feeling completely destroyed...
I'm so disgusted right now I can hardly write.
One summer between junior & senior year of college, I worked in a Mexican orphanage helping to build it & working with the kids. It was an orphanage 2 hours outside of Guadalajara with 126 kids (boys & girls). Most of them were not actually orphans but were children of prositutes.
The other day we were talking on the train about strange out of the ordinary things we've done in our lifes and I mentioned it. My friend said "Have you ever looked it up to see how they're doing?" I was all excited to see if I could find anything out.
The first website that popped up about it was from the SNAP network (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests). I felt sick as I read the article that the priest in charge of the orphanage was accused of molesting kids.
I feel sick to my stomach. I realize that the place gave the kids clothes, food & an education - kids, who more than likely, would've wound up on the streets or being used in their mom's "business" . I'm completely stunned that Father Charley would do this... The orphanage was practically funded by a church in Rockville Centre...
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

So no one is from Rockville Centre? There was a church that was the largest contributor. I'm going to try to find out info on it.

Re: Feeling completely destroyed...
I would be upset if I were you too, but unfortunately this doesn't shock me as much as it should. After hearing what so many priests here in the US were doing without being held responsible for their actions, it was probably even easier for a pedophile to victimize children abroad. I wonder how closely they are monitored by the diocese or organization that sends them there. I still think you should be proud of the work you did there. I think the sad things about this news is that if it is true, people will be less likely to donate to places like this and that the children who were victims of this guy may not have the resources to deal with it that victims in the US might.

D,I could not have said it better. It's horrible to learn about the things that go on and how people take advantage of the misery a child is going through. But don't dwell on the what this perosn has done, instead take action in whatever way you can to make this a better place for children.

Re: Feeling completely destroyed...
It is so sad...yesterday in Newsday there was an article about a priest who molested a whole family when they lived in Howard Beach in the 60s. He also was in Our Lady of Peace...my family's parish (before I was born).
Well this same priest had put his hand up my sister's skirt when she was little. She got off his lap right away. She never told anyone until she was an adult. Last ngiht she called the lawyer mentioned in the article to offer her testimony.
It is such a shame but people who like cars, try to work in the auto industry...people who like food, in the food industry...and pedophiles, where they have the easiest and most trusted access to children.
I think if they would just let priests marry, a lot of these problems would cease to exist....

Re: Feeling completely destroyed...
I don't think pedophilia (sp?) is an act that can be a subsitute for sex between consenting adults....I think that a pedophile is a pedophile, regardless of whether or not he's wearing a robe...

I don't think marriage is the answer for someone who molests others...I think electrocution would.

This also makes no sense to me. Celibacy does not create pedophiles and I don't see how allowing priests to marry would change a person's tendencies to abuse children.

Re: Feeling completely destroyed...
I think the argument is that people who are not allowed to express themselves in a healthy sexual way will turn to a more deviant outlet for the sexual needs. And these children are the victims.
I don't know if I agree with this argument,.
So I guess the question is do you believe that celibacy in the priesthood turns SOME people into pedofiles or do pedofiles BECOME priests to have access to children?

I get what the argument is, I just don't believe celibacy turns people into something they are not. I think if someone can't handle a vow of celibacy, they are likely to break that vow by expressing themselves in a sexual manner consistent with their natural tendencies.
I think the second part of your question may be true, though, as sad as that is. I also think that some individuals take that vow of celibacy, thinking somehow it will keep them from dealing with certain tendencies, or from dealing with their sexuality at all.

I don't think it's either - I think that people who have a deeply, deeply shameful interest/habit, or whatever you call it, are attracted to the profession because in their mind their dedication to a higher purpose "offsets" the sin. Perhaps they believe that if they become a priest they will have more incentive/guidance to resist temptation... who knows.
