Feeling Kinda Bad For DH
DH & I just bought a house and we knew going into it how much higher our bills would be and how we'd have to put ourselves on a strict budget. So far so good.
Now, DH isn't too good with money, so I'm in charge of it. So he just called me to ask if he could buy a bike for $1,000. I told him we didn't have the money right now and he got so sad that it makes me feel bad. He feels like he can't do anything he wants....he's not going to his friend's bachelor party because it'll be over $1K/per person (which I think is a ridiculous amount to ask anyone to spend, regardless of their financial situation.) Now its the bike. I know the best thing is to skip it right now and deep down, I think he knows it too but he's so sad and that makes me sad.

Re: Feeling Kinda Bad For DH
you are making sacrifces too.. eventaully youll all be making more $ and the mortgage wont seem like a burden...
maybe you can use some tax return $$ put aside for discretionary spending?
fyi dh and io have separate savings (also a joint one) but we pretty much do what we want as long as the bills are paid and we are both managing to put a little $ aside into savings

It stinks to feel this way. I sometimes, not always-lol!, feel bad if my dh wants something and I say no. I have caved in many times but not to the point that we could not pay a bill.

$1,000 on a bike and $1,000 on a bachelor party are both crazy to me. I took over the finances too when we got married and DH is not great with money either, although he has gotten better. Unfortunately, he will have to learn the different between wanting something and needing something. DH is still working on it.

Mine too!!! We JUST had this discussion (or basically just me yelling at him about it-lol!!) about how he needs to ask if it is a want or need, especially when it comes to the kids. They have WAY too many toys and don't need anymore. I do the bills too because he was never taught about money and his mother is still broke at the age of 60 even after many times she was given the opportunity to get on her feet and save some money and she never did.
