Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
Have you ever asked someone sitting alone and eating, like an elderly person, to join you?
I haven't
My old roommate would give old ladies rides home from the supermarket sometimes - walking all by themselves with all their groceries

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
I haven't asked someone to join me, but have carried multiple bags many times for overwhelmed, lost elderly people & moms with kids to Amtrack (I work in Penn Station - it's amazing how people can't figure out where Amtrack is....)

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
I gave an old man a ride to his assisted living home about 2 weeks ago
he was about 20 seconds away from being run over- I drove him all of 50 feet
but there was no sidewalk and I was over by where sunrise highway and pennisula merge- taking the back way to the southern state - it's really scary over there
I stopped traffic and he climbed it- he was so thankful
there was no way I could have drove away knowing he was trying to walk- with a walker no less

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
No. But there is an elderly man in my building who shuffles along at a snails pace- I offered to do his grocery shopping and haul his stuff to the laundromat every week. He declined.
I feel really bad for him. If I go out to do my grocery shopping and see him leaving- he will only be 1/2 way down the block when I get back after an HOUR.

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
no beccause im ususaly not alone eating- im either dining with clients or with my husband or friends so it would be weird to ask them to sit with me
but if i was alone- i doubt it= unless i was sharing a table at a food court at the airport or something

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
I have given people rides - the people I see everyday from the train but don't know- snowstorms, torrential rain storms, etc. Never with my kids in the car....except for the high school student from my block that missed his bus & was attempting to walk miles to the high school.
I wouldn't ask anyone to join me for lunch because I would assume they wanted to be left alone.

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
The office I work at is right next door to a physical therapy office, and there are many times I have offered to help them get to their car, or hold the doors open for them, or close their doors for them, and they decline. I think they are too proud to ask for help, or accept it

That's funny you say this because I've always wanted to do this! I must have been very emotional one month and I cried hysterically seeing an old man with grocery bags taking the bus. It broke my heart that he could barely walk and had no one to take him.

Re: Spinoff to Feeling Bad for People
No, but I don't think we can assume that people eating alone want company. I eat alone when at conferences and I love bringing a book and relaxing while eating.
