Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
Shots again...as a mother of a boy, I fear this. I am glad so much attention is being brought to autism...but at the same time, I want to know I am doing the right thing. That mom on Oprah really felt that it was the shots that did it. I know shots are given for a reason, but the stress level I get from this is too much.
I look at him and I can't imagine "loosing him" later on.
DH has decided to become superdad in the last month, and now is questioning my decision to go with the rotavirus shot.
As it is, Josh had a hep B shot in the hospital, now he is going to wind up with an extra hep B, the office decided to start all shots at 2 months now..so he winds up with an extra.
Its crazy how that helpless feeling I got last time on shot day comes back...watching all of this get pumped into him.
Then I think, how many women go to this practice that never even question it...tons I am sure. ughhhhhhhhhhh

I totally understand why you're feeling nervous, but I just wanted to mention that there is NO scientific support that immunizations cause autism. There is support for a genetic link, although the true cause is still unknown.

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
I do understand the nervousness as well...
But I truly believe in my heart, a doctor would not willingly give shots knowing their is a link between that and autism. From all I've read it seems as it is genetics...and that mom on oprah may have needed a cause to pinpoint at to why that happened to her son.
If and when it comes out that there IS a link I guess i'll retract my words, but I do not believe it. you are doing the right thing as a mom by immunizing him!! Don't worry too much!

I want to really emphasize this - I have been in the autism field for 12 years - I am definitely planning on vaccinating my son - there is no evidence of vaccines causing autism.
I know of families who chose not to vaccinate their children for various reasons, and some of their children still have autism. One family chose not to vaccinate their younger child because they believed it caused their 1st child's autism - and their 2nd child still wound up having autism. They also have 2 cousins with autism, so you really need to consider the genetic link more than anything else.
The reason people blame the vaccines is that they are given around the time that autism would manifest itself. Some children who are diagnosed with autism meet a lot of their developmental milestones and then unfortunately begin to lose skills. This is when parents blame vaccines...
Please do not worry. I am not thrilled about plugging my child full of vaccines either - more for the thought of all these unnatural things entering his body, but I'm also concerned about him getting sick...

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
thanks guys...I needed that. Thanks Jax for coming over
That is what I was telling DH this morning...I did not go to medical school, I can't imagine that drs dedicate their lives to keeping these babies healthy to endanger them at all. I asked the dr about rotavirus, he said he would give it to his kids...so I did it.
You are probably right about needing something to pinpoint..
thanks again. The hotflashes I was having are now gone

I was concerned when I became a mom to boys over 7 months ago but I did a lot of research on the relationship btw autism and vaccinations. I found this informational site really helpful - and calming.

I know how you feel - DD got the rotovirus vacc as well as the extra hep and I too was worried. What gave me some comfort was to speak to our good friend who is an md and a vaccine scientist -he really put our mind at ease.
It is all very confusing though

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
I feel what your feeling NOW and I didnt even have my son yet.
I know up and down all the talk of " there is no scientific evidence of a link"...but for me the word is YET. They are just getting into major research on the link versus in the past the reserach was based on finding a cure.
what if the link is found 5 years from now?
Im not trying to scare you and I am likely going to go ahead and vaccinate at the dr's reccomendations but It scares me soooo much.
I also dont feel a dr. truly cares THAT much about your own specific child ...they want to get the vaccines done when its convienent to them...hence the 3-4 at a time when its not the best way to do it...and they are more concerned with getting the vaccines done since there is no evidence yet ...
I dont mean to sound scary or jaded...Im just as scared as you ....

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
Janice, I understand your fears but dont worry you are doing the right thing. If there was a true link to vaccinations I think every child would have autism. the vaccines come from the same batches. Its becoming more of a genetic issue than a vaccine issue. I had a family of 2 boys come in monday to my job, they both have autism. the mom said she waited on the younger one to vaccinate and he still got it so right there is proof enough that vaccines do not cause autism.
from most of the literature it seems like parents need to blame something and that was what they believed caused thier child to have autism because it was diagnosed at around the same time vaccinations given.
And I do believe Dr.s do care and would not give a patient something that they know will harm them.

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
A good friend of mine's son was diagnosed with Autism at age 2, her daughter does not have it. I asked her what her theory was on how her son had it... she said, looking back, she could now see the signs from day one. He always had to be held facing out, had difficulty focusing, all of the classic symptoms. She said she just didn't know any better as he was her first child, she had no basis for comparison. Her daycare provider was suspicious as he didn't interact with the other kids.
My friend is convinced it was a genetic link or something that transpired in utero.

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
I think we all feel your pain & get just as worried over shots. It's the 1 in X number that always freak me out.
I chose to vaccinate my children. My sister did not. We both read the same books on the subject & came to different conclusions.
I pray that we both made the right decisions. I pray mine never suffer more than a little screaming, low grade fevers & some crankiness. I hope her kids never contract any of those diseases. I worry about them because if they do plan to travel, their odds go down dramatically that they could contract it. I also worry because we have more immigrants moving to the US who have not been vaccinated & could be carriers. It's one of those decisions where there is no right answer - only what you're comfortable with.

Re: Feeling sick to my stomach over 4 month check up tomorrow...
my cousin who lives in alabama doesnt vaccinate at all, and had me convinced not to do it either....BUT, my DH and i decided that #1- you have to vaccinate in order for your kids to go to public school #2- having the jobs that we do, and living in this area (NYC and surrounding) it is just CRAZY not to vaccinate with all of the immigrants and ppl not from here that dont vaccinate etc etc etc.... SOOOO- i understand where u are coming from, i def didnt want to do it, but i knew that research and stuff wasnt showing anything DEFINITE, and i didnt and dont want to run the risk of my DD having hep or TB or something like that.......

I want to add that you can delay and not do them now. I believe in vaccinating but not at such a younge age, especially for a baby not in daycare and I also don't believe in so many shots at once. Even though you started you can stop and continue later on, even if it's a series. You don't just start over you just pick up where you left of.
