Fence question
My parents just got a PVC fence put up. They live in Wantagh. Afterwards a guy pulled up in a car and took pictures and then drove away? Do you think they're going to be fined? Do you need a permit to put up a fence?

Re: Fence question
why would you need a permit to fence in your own yard?
maybe the person who took a pic liked it and wanted to get the same thing?

Re: Fence question
There are certain regulations when putting up a fence (in Suffolk anyway). It can be no more than 4' high up to 15' (? I believe it is 15, could be 14) in from the property line. Then it can go as high as 6'. I only know this because our contractor had to measure the fence on our property that actually belongs to our neighbor, but we are going for a variance and everything has to be to regulations.
Edited to clarify.

Re: Fence question
Well that's what they did. They put 4 feet in the front (the fence only comes to the middle of the house on both sides...it's not in front of the house) and it gradually gets bigger as it goes to the back. In the back it's 6 ft.

Re: Fence question
I live in Massapequa Park and you do need a permit (for practically everything BTW but thats a personal rant). Do you think that was a someone intent on ratting them out who took the pic? B/c how would that person know if they had a permit (if needed) or not? If they do need a permit, they should file for it ASAP. If they ever sell their house and there's no record they ever filed for one, they will get multiplied fines. At least thats how it works here. Maybe its just one of the benefits we get by living in an incorporated village

Re: Fence question
you don't need a permit to put up a fence
town of brookhaven regulations: (not sure if it's the same for other towns)
from the foundation of the house going to the front, it has to be 4 feet.
from the foundation of the house going to the back, the fence can be up to 6 feet.
the fence can be put EXACTLY on the property line (best way to know is to have a survey done of the property)
maybe the guy who took the pics really liked the way it came out and wants to get a fence himself... or - he could be from the fence company just taking pics of the work?

Re: Fence question
I had a fence installed about 3 years ago. You don't need a permit in Town of Hempstead unless you are going higher than 6' on the back and sides and 4' in the front. We're on a corner, so there were additional rules about how far in from the street we had to be as well. They probably were from the fence company.

I was thinking that this could be the case also.

That was my thought too. It is common for a contractor to take before and after photos.

Re: Fence question
I live in levittown and the previous owner filed for a fence and pool permit, 3 years later we just had to pay $30 for the fence permit, it is just a wooden fence maybe because of the height like previously mentioned but it was needed.
