Ferber question....we are starting tonight UPDATE AT BOTTOM
ok...so we just did our 5 minute session....she has settled down.
Let's say she falls asleep for an hour or an hour and a half...
do I start over with 5 min, or go on to the 10 min crying session?

Re: Ferber question....we are starting tonight
I would say start over with the 5 min.. but thats just what i would do. I started the CIO tonight too, and he totally and completely FLIPPED OUT.. i waited 5 then 10, and now he's been sleeping an hour. Its the wee hrs of the morn i have to worry about with him. Good luck Shana, hope it works for you. Not so sure with Jacob.....

Re: Ferber question....we are starting tonight UPDATE
well....we put her down at 8...red eyes, rubbing. She was ok for a bit and started to cry. We let her cry for 5 min, put the paci back in, comforted her. Out she went....slept till around 10/10:30 when she lost her paci again.
Let her cry 5 min...comforted her. Needed to do a 10 min session, comforted her. Asleep she went.
Then she cried again...not sure what time, but DH was so not liking it--called it sadistic and cruel...so he went in, gave her the paci again, she calmed down again and slept IN HER CRIB till her 4am feeding.
Now mind you...all this crying & fussing is IN HER SLEEP...eyes closed. Strange if you ask me....

Re: Ferber question....we are starting tonight UPDATE AT BOTTOM
That sounds like you had a great night- esp. since you never made it to the 15min mark...
For me- it was 2 nights like this... and then he was sleeping through the night....
How is her napping during the day???? Daytime naps have a huge effect on the ferber method, IMO>..

her naps stink....an hour at the most, 20-30 min at the least.
Tonights attempt failed miserably. I did 2 of the 5 min crying sessions (our own modfication)....she soaked her sheets with sweat and began hyperventilating nad could not catch her breath to calm down.

IMO- then she mustve been crying way beyond a level 10....
Comfort her, and then maybe try again...

really Marissa? How do you determine what level they cry at????
I picked her up and shushed her and swayed her and that got her to calm down and fall asleep....put her down, she opened her eyes, I rubbed her belly and head and she is now asleep

Re: Ferber question....we are starting tonight UPDATE AT BOTTOM
Well- if she broke out in a sweat and she was hyperventilating... then I think she was crying a little too hard...
I determined it just by knowing my baby I guess- Ive seen him at that total screaming, sweating stage... and new I didnt want it to go beyond half of that....(If that makes sense...)
For me- I never let putting him to bed be a CIO production.... Ill put him in, and if he is whining and fussing- fine... but screaming- no....
To put him to bed- I give him his last bottle, and just hold him until I see the eyes begin to roll....
He's pretty much asleep when I put him down....
I only really used CIO for night wakenings.... (2 days of not coming into our bed... was enough for him to realize he has to sleep in his own...)
Nap during the day makes a HUGHE difference on your night time routine!!! Even now that he is older.... if he didnt nap- he'll be so overtired and we'll have a horrible night...
On avg. she prob should be napping every 2-3hrs. Watch the clock and look for the signs (red eyes, irritablness, rubbing of the eyes) and then put her in..... You'll realzie that these things happen like clock work every few hours...
At this age Ryan took one BIG nap (1-2hrs) the others were just like half an hour naps...
I *think* a 4 month old should (every baby is different but a round a bout) sleeping 15hrs./ day....

Re: Ferber question....we are starting tonight UPDATE AT BOTTOM
Dont want to hijack this thread, but Jacob naps horribly too every day. Since putting him to nap in his crib i get max 45 min. In his swing where he used to be i got an hour and a half to two hours... but dont wanna use the swing anymore. He's getting too used to it. So today he napped at 9:15-10:00, then 12:45-1:30... DONE!!!!! Oh and then 4:30-5:00... what the hell is goin on? I am so confused, how can this 4 month old not be tired????????????????????? I"m 30 and i'm freakin EXHAUSTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope I never have to do this. Sara is 9 weeks old and sleeps wherever. At night she goes to her crib without a problem. Am I lucky or will this end?

Re: Ferber question....we are starting tonight UPDATE AT BOTTOM
I didn't actually think of it as ferberizing at the time, but when angela was about 14 months old, we realized we were getting nutty...it was taking us like 2 hours to put her to bed, trying to rock her, then even trying to sleep on the floor in her room so she would fall asleep without crying....our whole night was spent trying to get her to sleep. One night, we just said, that's it. We put her to bed, she cried and cried, went in once to tell her we loved her and left again (that was the hardest part). The first night she cried like that for 45 minutes. The next night it was like 20 minutes. The next night 10, the next about 3. At the fifth night, when we said it was time to go to bed, she grabbed elmo, kissed her dad, and let me WALK her into her room, put her in the crib, rolled over and went to sleep. And that is how it's been now about 90% of the time. It looks harsh that we let her cry for that 45 minutes, but MAN was it worth it for all of us to break that 2 hour going to sleep pattern!
