Ferrel Cat Questions
Hi everyone. So my mother has been feeding a cat that has adopted us as a family. She's been around since a kitten. She will come by and talk (meow) to my mother. She really is adorable.
We decided to do a trap & release. We found a great program and they referred us to a vet here on SI. The staff at the vet were very nice but when my mom met the 2 vets they were very unpersonable and almost rude. Practically throwing the cat at her when she went to pick her up. When my mom inquired about flea medicine the copped an attitude about how all my mom was to do was take the cat home and release her.
My mother was (and is) so upset. The cat is now very scared of her and shes afraid of the poor baby being in pain. We just got a good look at the poor cat and there is a huge patch of hair missing on her hip, that's apparently the incision.
So my question is for cat owners that had their female cats fixed, how long did they seem in pain and where was the incision?
We are so upset about this and are worried the vet treated her terribly!
Thank you for reading this and sorry if its so long and if there are typos.
Crystal

Re: Ferrel Cat Questions
I am sorry that you had a bad experience trying to do a good thing.
My sister's female cats NEVER had a scar on the hip from being altered. I would call the SPCA in that neighborhood and lodge a complaint. I would also let the referring organization know as well.
ETA: Is it possible that the IV for the anesthesia was placed on the hip? Are there stitches there?

Re: Ferrel Cat Questions
Thank you for your response. We are going to call the agency tomorrow. They were closed when we called today.
Yes there are stiches on her side A friend said maybe they did that so there would be less of a chance of infection from her belly being on the ground. I hope so. We are just so upset. The poor baby

Re: Ferrel Cat Questions
I have heard of cats being fixed and having stitches on their side. I saw it at the shelter when I got my kitty.

Re: Ferrel Cat Questions
When my girls were spayed their insicisions were on their bellys. The IV goes into the back leg. I would call the vet and inquire. Let us know what happens..

We called and that is where they do the incision. However "meow meow" as we lovingly reffer to her as is doing MUCH better. She is acting like her normal self and is starting to trust my mom again. She hated her for awhile And to our relief the incision looks smaller now that it did the day after. It must have been swollen.

Re: Ferrel Cat Questions
The owners of the barn where we keep our horses have 2 feral cats that they had trapped and spayed. The cats were of course understandably upset, scared, confused, etc. after they were fixed. They actually disappeared for a few days, but they did come back.
I know your mom is worried about the kitty (and that's wonderful that your mom takes such good care of the cat), but I think it's NORMAL for the cat to be scared after that ordeal. I don't think it's necessarily an indication that the vets were cruel to her.
I've also heard about cats having an incision on their side for spaying.
Hope you get it all figured out and the kitty feels better soon! (It takes a couple of days...)
